When translated (this is what I get for not paying attention in Bible study all those years back) the word used in hebrew (or is it Greek? Grrr) means both. I gotta look that up.


To know God is to fear Him for He is a just God, filled with righteousness and terrible judgements to punish the iniquity of the wicked.

To fear God is to respect Him for He is full of compassion and mercy towards those who are broken in spirit. He heals the brokenhearted and gives hope to those who have none.

To respect God is to know Him for He is the humblest of gods. By making Himself as a servant to all, He shows man the path unto others. True greatness is serving others, this is the teaching of Jesus in the book of John.

When I came to know God, I feared Him. I knew my sins to be great and my mind defiled. I knew Him to be holy and full of righteous anger at the misdeeds of the wicked such as I. I was not worthy that I should approach Him, yet He beckoned me to His throne. He told me He loved me and I did not understand Him. I was afraid of the Lord.

Time moved past and my fear subsided. I grew curious at the one I called Lord Almighty. Taste and see that I am good said He. I partook of the blessings of the Lord and was filled with wonder at Him. He healed my sick mind, mended my broken soul, and breathed new life into my dead spirit. I was born again, adopted, a new creation in Christ Jesus. He told me to call him Abba. No longer should I call Him Lord, but that I should call Him Father. I asked why He chose me and He told Me that His desire is that none should perish, but that all might come to repentance. A robe of glory and a crown of joy He has prepared for all men if only they would heed the gospel of His Son Jesus. "Prepare a testimony before men" said He "That they may know that the Lord is merciful and is willing that all would approach Him"
Great is my respect for the Lord, our Father, for mine eyes have seen the most wicked and loathesome of men find a place refuge in Him. They who could not be loved, would not be loved, dwelling in safety under the shadow of His mighty wings. Great is my respect for the Father.

The fact that a large portion of our laws and the most ingrained of our societal moral dogmas are based in, on, or through the Bible should mean something.

Means nothing, mainly because most of the laws you refer to are the basis of all common sense moral behavior and without them any society would plunge into anarchy. You think the concept that killing people or stealing is "bad" is solely derived from god? Please.

In this country, the Bible influences much of the way people choose to live their lives.
