Thread: Where does gaming gossip and rumors stand with you?

  1. Where does gaming gossip and rumors stand with you?

I mean, to some it's a great way for discussion (though I've already gathered how some feel about Magic Box or Q-Mann). However, I wanted to tap the lines of communication to see how every gamer here has come to look at those juicy tidbits. I remember growing up reading EGM and I was very green about everything that came out of Q-Mann's mouth. To me, that was like the bible of gossip...and it never dawned on me that half of the stuff he talked about would never come true (well, a lot of it, at least when it came to Street Fighter WAS on point...these days I dunno).

I have already run into one dedicated board member who's personally told me that TNL needed to stray from using such info as part of our daily gaming content for news since Q-Mann's integrity should not be viewed as totally reliable and nothing more than rumors.

    Thoughts...

  2. See, I don't mind rumors. They get the brain working; thinking about possibilities.

The problem, however, is that some rumors are self-fulling prophesies. For example, last month Q-Mann speculated that 3rd party companies (might be) pulling support for the GC. Is this true? He said it's rumour, fueled by EA comments stating that it's incredible difficult to make a profit on the system. However, this rumour might affect customer perceptions of the system, which would in turn hurt GC 3rd party sales.

  3. It depends on how reputable the source is. I like it when Matt Cassamina from IGN drops a rumor because he's usually right (the Rare-MS deal, Link in SC2). On the other hand, I don't like OXM's rumors because it's usually bullshit.

I don't mind rumors when they're presented as rumors. It's fun to imagine the possibilities of what may be coming down the pike.

I've ignored Quartermann, though, ever since he reported that UN Squadron and Konami's Aliens were in development for the Genesis.

Evidently, I can hold a grudge for a really long time.

  5. I just think it is important to report rumours as rumours and to evaluate the source when reporting on them.

If everything is clear then it can be interesting to discuss rumours.

    Unless they're stupid.

  6. Well, I remember just recently when Sqoon posted an article and a certain someone jumped all over him. Later Sqoon posted a headline which was tagged "really official now..."

  7. Personally I like rumors a lot, they make games and talking about games a lot more fun and interesting, and even though I own all three systems, hearing rumors about them isn't any less interesting to me.
Buy Yakuza and Oblivion. Help yourself, help TNL.

  8. As long as a rumor is presented as such, and not as a legit piece of news, I have no problem with it.

  9. I dunno, I'm not big on rumors. Just give me the news, the facts.

Rumors seem to be nothing more than fuel for message board flamewars (Megaton anyone?).
