Most 3 year olds do know how to draw and thus he should kick their asses to make them teach him. Solid advice in my books.

  5. You know the internet has gotten too anal and jaded when an 11-year old gets reamed by people twice his age. Congrats.

Even if he were 25, he still wanted some help from here. I feel honored that anyone would want my advice on anything, and don't know why anyone else wouldn't feel the same.

As to sketching...the fun is you get to be messy. When I was growing up, I had this awful notion that you had to draw everything the way it was supposed to look on the first try. That's not true though - when you work with pencil you can be messy, goof around, and do whatever you want. Once you get some shapes, figures, or what have you done, and you like what you have, darken the lines you want to 'keep' and then lightly go over the lines you want to get rid of with an eraser. The cool part is that a good vinyl/plastic eraser will erase light pencil marks without you having to push real hard on the paper. So then the 'sketch' marks go away, the darkened lines stay, and you have something that's polished and ready for inking, shading, coloring, etc.

    I hope that helped.

  7. Solid advice from Hero, I've also found that if you use non photographic blue lead (like architects use in blue prints) that you can draw over the good lines with regular graphite for a solid sketch.

  9. Start off by duplicating some photos. In other words try copying them without tracing. I draw better doing that than drawing from my head.

Professional illustrators and artists do this all the time. It stems way back. No human has a photographic memory (well, it's rare anyway) and a picture of a sleight when you're drawing one is a very good idea (unless it's one of those round red ones). As I was saying, professional illustrators keep files of ads and photos and pictures in alphabetical order so when they need to draw an oak tree or something like that they thumb through it, take it out and get busy, etc.

People think they're 'cheating' or something but everybody does it. It's imperative when trying to mimic a lifelike thing (drapery, skin, fur, et cetera)

I believe the official term is referencing.
