Thread: Oscar nominations

  1. Oscar nominations

    http://www.aintitcoolnews.com/display.cgi?id=14449

I'm hoping for Adaptation to win everything it was nominated for. I'm also baffled as to why Cidade de Deus (City Of God) wasn't nominated for best foreign language film. It easily beats any of those, and I know many agree. Metropolis should've been in the best animated feature category over Treasure Planet.

And please, posting about your apathy regarding the Oscars is not needed or wanted in this thread.

  2. About Schmidt got screwed. Chicago's probably good, but something tells me that it's only garnered so much attention because it's the first live-action musical since Evita...

Metropolis? Nah, they couldn't see fit to have more than one worthy movie on that list. Lilo & Stitch was great, but I'm not sure it should be on there. Spirited Away really ought to get the award.

  3. I'm happy for Chicago, it's a great movie. I'm glad Adaptation got one for screenplay, but I was disappointed that Spike Jonze didn't get another Best Director nomination. I'm also happy for LOTR:TT, but I was shocked that they weren't even nominated for Cinematography. I think the two dumbest categories are Animated Feature and Song. The Animated Feature is really just Disney vs. Dreamworks. Treasure Planet? Ice Age? Metropolis should definetly been nominated. Overall, it's okay. Of course the movies that deserve to win won't and I'll be pissed off so it doesn't matter.

  4. Yeah, I actually think Spirited Away will take the Oscar.

I just read on AICN that people from the Academy walked out on Cidade de Deus because it was too violent for them. Too bad for them, it's easily the best movie of the year IMO. At least anyone could agree that it's better than any of the other foreign films they nominated. Another movie that was robbed in that category is Y Tu Mama Tambien. I really don't see how it deserves a screenplay nod but nothing else.

    My predictions:
    Animated: Spirited Away
Director: Scorsese for Gangs Of New York
    Documentary: Bowling For Columbine
    Foreign: Anything but Hero.
    Motion Picture: Chicago
Screenplay: Nia Vardalos for My Big Fat Greek Wedding
    Adapted Screenplay: Adaptation

Those are really the only ones I think I can call. I haven't even seen a lot of the films nominated, I'm just going on my knowledge of how the Academy does things.

*edit* Yeah, I forgot Jonze. He deserves a nomination, definitely.

  5. i havent seen any of the forigen films.. but from most of the indi film mags, and mainstream mags.. all the buzz is around EL CRIMEN DEL PADRE AMARO.. as the best film this year..

  6. Bleh. Lots of movies I would like to have seen nominated for things were'nt. I was really hoping to see Punch-Drunk Love (Best Film of the Year) somewhere on there, unless I missed it. If Spirited Away does not win Best Animated feature I am going to kill someone. Other then that, snooze. Great movies came out this year, but nothing as amazing as Punch-Drunk Love, and nothing for it.
    Barf! Barf! Barf!

  7. Well, I pretty much dont care about most of the films that have been nominated Good to see Two Towers on the list, but its not going to win anything.

Also great that Hero got nomination as Best Foreign film. I dont see it winning, but it made the list, and overcame all the bullshit Miramax put in its way.

  8. The list gets me mad. It's typical of modern Hollywood. LOTR:FOTR should have been Best Film last year. TTT, while not the best film of the year, is better than the rest of the list, will lose again.

It doesn't matter if a movie is good, as long as the makers play their Hollywood politics correctly, they'll do just fine.
bastard of the new world order.

  9. Actually, it's pretty much accepted that the Academy is holding out for Return Of The King.

  10. I should go and check what films got SFX nominations. Thats pretty much the only category that really interests me, unless the film that I like compete for the best picture. But this happens very, very rarely.
