WORLD EXCLUSIVE: KOJIMA'S GBA GAME REVEALED!

First ever shots and art from the Metal Gear Solid creator's unique, light-sensitive sun-action RPG

10:56 Let there by light! Following only the vaguest of announcements and barest of details, we can bring you the first ever images and artwork from Hideo Kojima's innovative handheld project. Boktai (shortened from "Bokura no Taiyo", or "My Sun") is a bold new venture on Nintendo's handheld, being the first ever GBA title whose gameplay is directly affected by light.
And while some GBA owners may reasonably argue that, thanks to the console's display, they've been battling with light since day one, Boktai comes complete with a built in device which registers the amount of light the GBA is currently reading, using this information to alter the game accordingly, with dramatic effect.

The hero of the game is a mysterious, anime-style character named Dyango, who is armed with a gun (see art) that looks to be sensitive to light. The game begins in the city of Kiri, and it is thought Dyango must use his gun to harness the power of sunlight to vanquish an evil vampire threat.

Vampires are vulnerable to light, y'see, so one would assume it is advantageous to play the game in natural light. The screenshots show the game at dawn, daytime and nightime, and the latter period is most likely where Dyango will require the power of natural light at its fullest.

Admittedly details are still scarce, but the first images give us a good insight into the experience. The potential here is obviously enormous, and with the visionary genius of Hideo Kojima behind the project, Boktai could well usher in a new dawn of adventuring on Game Boy Advance.

Expect on awful lot more on Boktai soon, but in the meantime we suggest you tear open the curtains, let blinding rays of life-affirming joy fill the room and feast your eyes on the first ever shots and art, scribbled by Kojima-san himself.
    Interersting...

On a side note, the article seems to be wrong about the name. Firstly, Bokura is plural, so it would be "Our Sun" but "Boku" is written in katakana so it's not a japanese word. More likerly a name. Someone with better japanese knowledge might be of some help.

  2. I'm interested. Verrry interested, in fact.

    2 things tho.

#1. what if you have an Afterburner installed? (I don't, but I'm just curious)
#2. Is the main character going to be fruity like Raiden? I'll still buy it if he is, but I'd like to know ahead of time.

    *looks at screenshots*
Looks pretty creative to me. I'm liking what I'm seeing...

  3. Doesn't matter if you have an afterburner. The game detects natrual, external light.

  4. How could it possibly distuingish between natural and artifical light?

I mean, I'm sure the GBA is smart and all, but externally, how could it possibly know the difference?

  5. The cart has a little sensing eye on it.

  6. Is it the Eye of Truth, One That Sees All?

Katakana isn't only for foreign words. They often will use it to emphasize words that should be in hiragana or kanji. For example, you will almost always see doki doki / waku waku in katakana.

  9. That game sounds very very strange. I must admit the concept isn't really clicking with me just yet....

The screens/art are also pretty strange...
