Perhaps "he" didn't need to. Nevertheless, Tokido's a great player.
So Mech, you're saying that the US CPS3 is different from the JP CPS3 version? Interesting indeed. Is SRK Shoryuken? If not, please enlighten. 3rd Strike is my favorite fighter ever and I'd love to read up on it myself. I HATE Oro. LOL, Technosphile, who is certainly no SF3 afficianado manages to make him pretty formidable. Luckily none of the people I know that I consider to be truly badass ever use him. I'd be hosed.
And Bahn, Ondre was doing what looked to be pretty basic stuff for him that was light years beyond what that cat did in the video. For instance just busting out these huge combos from the elbow. Every single time he landed that damn elbow he'd take me for a ride like I've never seen. I didn't see that dude in the vid capitalize on the elbow once. I know nothing of Urien but it would seem that if one American guy who definitely does not fight in tournaments is able to pull that off in "casual play" (LOL, I'd rarely use the word casual to describe the play around here) repeatedly you'd think one of the greatest badasses ever to live and walk the mean streets of Japan would be able to pull it off at the tournament. Once. Maybe I'm wrong.

Actually I never intended to insult or judge Tokido. I'm sure "he'd" slay me quickly. I know that when I'm in a SF3 match I try to end it fast with the most heinous combos I can muster. Kudos to Tokido if sportsmanship was the reason for not using those. Lord knows they're the utmost in annoying. Of course I could just parry the stupid elbow....

Regarding CPS3 boards I have no clue, to my knowledge the tweaks are only in the US DC version. Yes, SRK is Shoryuken.com.So Mech, you're saying that the US CPS3 is different from the JP CPS3 version? Interesting indeed. Is SRK Shoryuken? They've got a thread about the unblockables, but the match shown earlier used the one in which Urien launches a combo and ends it with an Aegis and a tackle designed specifically to miss. The tackle pushes the downed opponent into the Aegis while Urien then launches a flying knee, so that when they rise they end up in the middle of the Aegis (striking from the front) and Urien's knee (which is a cross-up attack because of placement, striking from the rear). The only way out of this is use a character who has a Super that begins with invincibility frames and to use that as a wake-up ("teleporting" through the Aegis).
I'll go take a look at that video again for comparision, but what character was Ondre fighting against with you guys? All characters are not the same, they all float differently and have hit boxes in different locations. What makes Q juggle does not nessecarily make Yun juggle.
I can attest to "skill in execution versus skill in competition"...I don't have time to hang out in arcade's, look up obscure combos, or research infinites, but I *have* been playing fighting games of all sort for a long time. -and, I beat down players all the time who can perform far more involved combos, and know more tricks than I. I even know a few, who will sit at home in practice mode with a faq, and just practice stuff for hours, and in many cases, even make up their own crazy combos.
I haven't played MvC2 for months, but the other day I had to wait for someone, so I visited my old haunt (the University arcade) for a kick. Strangely, even though everyone else had been playing consistently, I still beat them with my non-tier team because they generally practice "tricks" whereas I practice strategy (although MvC2 may be a bad example). My point is, there's a big difference in the types of skill, and while they can relate and feed off each other, having one does not automatically constitute the other.
ps: Not that "tricks" don't work, though...but they only tend to work a few times (or usually just once) on adaptive players. Personally, I thought the Urien player in the video was amazing, even if he was exploiting a glitch. His timing, anticipation and prediction of his opponent, and overall strategy were all quite impressive (versus the Makoto player who had canned responses to controlled situations).
Excellent responses. Made me think and I like that. I was Dudley the whole time Ondre was over and it was just he and I. Perhaps the elbow juggles don't work so easily(or at all) with Makoto.
Nice words on strategy vs. trickery too Fury. I was recently looking at a "Skill Smith" videotape and saw quite a few Dudley combos that I've never known or even seen. I'm still pretty effective though and I like to think that it's because I'm able to read my opponents' strategy and timing moreso than because I've truly studied the juggling combo game. I still employ every combo and juggle I can but it's the strategy that allows me to land them.
Oh yeah, Mech, I meant to tell you that that Oro avatar you were sporting for a minute there is just OTT cool!

In the video Urien was up against Makoto, this is both good and bad. Makoto is a good anti-Urien in all but one aspect: her juggability. Chances are, Urien was played defensively because an excellent Makoto could easily rip him a new hole, hence he most likely wasn't buffering charges and Supers like normal.
Notice the first match: Makoto doesn't give him time to build up Supers so he relies on parries and priority to get in hits until he can launch a combo. Once he does he gives off a damn nice one that isn't as spectacular as if he had two Supers but still deals about 30-40% damage (couldn't really tell). He knows his moves and knows how to mess with his opponents reactions, which is what gives him the launcher and helps him win. In second match he absolutely disgraces Makoto, juggling her across the playing field and then back again, allowing only one hit during that time which prevented a perfect. To go across screens like that isn't as outwardly flashy as a pounding corner combo, but arguably much harder.Oh yeah, Mech, I meant to tell you that that Oro avatar you were sporting for a minute there is just OTT cool! Thanks!
