Thread: Greatest false rumors of all time

  1. The no Capcom All Stars rumor was a dousy.

  2. The Sega Neptune. Then EGM went so far, as to post a false website with a recently found wharehouse full of un-distributed units. Classic!

The Dreamcast was going to be backwards compatible with Saturn.

The Project Reality Console (N64) was going to harness the power of an SGI workstation.

Though not a rumor, but it should be, Sony's announcement, that the PS2 can push over 100 million polygons per second. I'm waiting.

It almost was. I'm sure it killed off the genre as far as some people were concerned.

What about the Gamecube originally being called "StarCube"?
I don't think that was a rumor, as I recall that was what NOJ had originally wanted to call it, but NOA said "No way."

If true, that gives something else to be thankful for about NOA. StarCube brings to mind old cartoons like Rainbow Brite.

Although it would be humorous to spout off lines like, "So I was playing Eternal Darkness on my StarCube..."

  6. Mortal Kombat did indeed have it's fare share of crappy rumors.

    - Did you know you can play as that dude on fire in the background of the pit 2 MK2, or those floating monks?

    - You can make the trees eat your opponent in the living forrest, etc, etc.

GTA3 had a shit load of rumors about the full wing dodo, the maibatsu monstrosity, darkel. I'm sure Vice City is just as bad, but I haven't been keeping track.

Umm... Im sorry, but thats not a rumor. Nintendo talked it up. Constantly. SGI talked it up. Constantly. In fact, what was supposed to be so special about the N64 was that it did in fact harness the power of an SGI workstation. If you have access to any old Nintendo Powers, or really, any magazines from about 1994-1995 (when the N64 was being announced) you could see it, plain as day.

I know I have an old NextGeneration, #14 or something, that has an interview with an SGI guy. He says basically that very thing, and this was right around the time the N64 and Super Mario 64 were first unveiled (at Shoshinkai! Remember that business?).

Sure, maybe its a horrible, ugly mistruth, but its no rumor. Nintendo pounded that "fact" into our brain like no other.

  8. Sure Nintendo and SGI announced it, but during that announcement, most games for the N64 were being developed on SGI workstations. Some of the early demo shots of the Project Reality test screens, were nothing but a pox. They later admitted in those magazines of the past, that the console that hit the market, was not as powerful as the top of the line SGI workstations available to market back then. The demo's did not show the real hardware in action, but what an SGI workstation was capapable of.

For that reason, it was speculation on both Nintendo and SGI's part, of what they thought the hardware was going to be, when they finished the chipsets. Project Reality, was really Project Speculation. A rumor as far as I'm concerned.

  9. Actually the CHip in the N64 is a toned down version of the chip that is in the SGI Indy workstation

ive worked on those old Indys and even the full speed one isnt all that impressive for interactive 3d work

even using Power Animator or Softimage which many N64 games would be made on they werent that great

granted you also have to realise the Indy's had a shitload more ram than an N64 but its really not that off base of what they said

it just wasnt up to the scale of SGI workstations of that day

for what it was based off of the N64 wasnt that bad

IMHO its not much different from what MS has done in this day and age, claiming the Xbox uses a PIII and bassicaly a geforce 3 its really a celeron and more like a geforce 2.5

  10. I almost totally forgot that the N64 started out as "Project Reality". Thats a pretty good code word, considering its graphics are as far from realistic as possible.
