Thread: Do you like the new Capcom, or the old Capcom more?

  1. #11
I enjoy most of their new stuff but their CPS1/2 days were their best.

  2. well, before I could look to Capcom for 2D fighters, beat em ups, shooters, and Mega Man ^^

Now, I can look forward more 'new' franchise names, but no 2D, less sequels, and no SF4 =(

I'm torn between the two - I want Viewtiful Joe and Auto Modellista, but I miss the days where I could count on Capcom as one of the last remaining 2D bastions.

  3. I love Capcom. Plain and simple.

Their cheapness shows through quite often, in both meanings of the word, but I still enjoy many of their products. From their too-hard bosses to their shameless recycling (I'm talking terms of engines here, not characters and ideas) they've always had a lot of flaws.

With the characters, even if they weren't all theirs they were still more individualized then many of their newer characters today. Megaman has the most plain anime face in existance but he sports a suit of armor that's instantly recongnizable. Compare that to their big franchise of RE and could you really pick any of those characters out of a crowd? They're designed to look like regular people, which they do so well that their characters lack individual stylistic traits. Hell, take a look at the new Dino Crisis 3 people for a shining example of that. They sport futuristic suits but they look more in place with a million space-themed B-movies with none of the distinction as something like Megaman's.

Their lack of "true" fighting games is also fairly depressing, with us being graced with more Tech Romancers and Star Gladiator 2s then we are SFIIIs or the ever-missing Darkstalkers.

Killer 7 looks incredible as hell (even though I can't tell a damn thing about the gameplay) but I really question Glass Rose. I don't like the focus they have on their crappy titles while leaving many of their superior products behind, but I still love a lot of what they put out. Auto Modellista (with the domestic tweaks) should help continue that until Viewtiful Joe comes along as reinforcments.

I do ever await Zero 2 and GC EXE, even if no SFIV is announced. But we had to wait a long time for SFIII to come and it was an insane leap, so I can only hope that whenever Capcom works on SFIV it will be another beautiful jump ahead.

[edit]Boy there were a bunch of posts since I started writing that. I'm slow.

  4. My favorite era of Capcom is 1986-2001.

They produced the best beatemups (Alien vs. Predator, The Punisher, and a slew of others).

I'll have to admit they did do a couple upgrades too many to Street Fighter II. Super SFII is the game that Champion Edition should have been.

I have always thought their shooters (19XX series, Commando & Mercs, etc) were very good. Unfortunately they seemed to have quit developing that genre, but Takumi filled the void rather nicely with their CPS II titles and GigaWing 2. Raizing also stepped up to the plate with the stellar Dimahoo and the mildly disappointing but still good 1944. Capcom gets some credit for being the publisher on these.

Strider is great, and Capcom thankfully did the true sequel to it.

CFAS still does look promising. Even if it's canned for the arcades, I wouldn't mind seeing it go right to PS2.

It's regrettable IMHO that they seem to have turned away from 2D and arcades almost totally. I would've liked to see a Strider 3 come out on either the Chihiro or System 246. Part 2 retained the Strider gameplay for the most part while raising the graphical bar on PS1, so this could've been a winner.

I still like the new Capcom and look forward to Viewtiful Joe and Auto Modellista. Something is just missing, though.

    Finished in 2021: 8 games (PC: 4, PS4: 2, PS3: 1, X1: 1)

  5. Old.

Capcom has always been one of my favorite companies; I've always admired their devotion to releasing titles for any and all systems, including those fated to be short-lived. I'm disappointed they never made a Virtual Boy game, it would've rocked (I'm sure).

If it wasn't for Capcom, the DC would only be half as godly as it is now. I think that the majority of my games are either Nintendo, Sega, or Capcom (and I mean in ALL my systems). They're great, but I DO want a REAL fighting game... and soon!

PS - If it MUST be 3D, don't make it butt-ugly, for once. Learn from lesser developers *cough*TeamNinja*cough*

  7. Damn straight, the DC library would only be half of what it is (and half as good) if it weren't for Capcom.
I prefer the old to the new, but that goes for almost every company these days. Don't get me wrong, there's been some kick ass games released in the last few years and things are looking up and all. It would just seem that my taste in games is pretty out of date.

  8. Capcom will always suck until I get a sequel to Black Tiger....

    ....or at least a port!

Here's your Black Tiger port, Melf.

Isn't it everything you ever dreamed of?

  10. Oh my god! Neo, what the hell have you done to my sweet, sweet memories?

...and what the hell system is that?
