Should I watch the American or Japanese version of The Ring first?

A buddy of mine said the Japanese version was silly. But, then again, he hates everything.

Well, heres my take on it. The Japanese version is older, and therefore not as up to date, and somewhat confusing. However, by watching it first, you will probably have more of a feel for what they were trying to do with the American version. I saw the Japanese version about a year ago, and i looked at the American version different because of that.

I have only seen the Japanese one. It's sorta Stanley kubrick-esque with very deliberate pacing and glimpses of terror here and there. It's definitely sets a creepy mood. I'm curious to see the US one but Americans tend to dumb down foreign movies.

have to say I honestly liked the American version better(Im a japanese minor, so I'm usually biased towards nippon), but I have to recommend the Japanese version first, it's less direct and lets your mind wander over it more.
