Thread: Tobey not in Spiderman 2?

  1. Tobey not in Spiderman 2?

He may still have radioactive blood at the box office, but a bad back could end up derailing Tobey Maguire's return as Spiderman.

Maguire, who became a Hollywood titan starring in last year's top-grossing movie as the web-slinging Marvel Comics super hero, may be replaced in the SpiderMan sequel by the real life boyfriend of his on-screen love interest, Kirsten Dunst, it is reported today.

Maguire's spokesperson told the entertainment trade paper the actor is still healing from "mild discomfort in his back" brought on by physically demanding roles in his last two films. Maguire finished production on the original stunt-heavy Spiderman in April 2001, then went to work 18 months later on Seabiscuit, portraying jockey Red Pollard. That four-month shoot wrapped last month.

The question now is whether he will be well enough to reprise his role as the teenage geek transformed by the bite of a radioactive spider in time to begin production on The Amazing Spiderman sequel project.

"With an April 12 start date around the corner, everyone involved wants to be certain he is able to do the intense stunts," his spokesperson said. In line to don Peter Parker's red-and-blue tights if Maguire isn't fit to swing from skyscrapers again is actor Jake Gyllenhaal, who happens to be dating Dunst and who recently starred in the films Moonlight Mile and The Good Girl. - Reuters
It wouldn't be the same without him. =/

  2. Jake Gyllenhaal, who the hell is this? Thats it, I not seeing the sequel if Tobey is not going to be in it.

  3. ya that would suck if tobey wasnt it

he made a great peter parker

  4. Jake Gyllenhaal, who the hell is this?
He's the guy who played Donnie Darko! I didn't like that movie at all but alot of people here seemed to.

Anyways if Toby Maguire isn't back as Spiderman, well there goes the trilogy. It would just cheapen the overall series, like all the different Batmans.

  5. I hated Tobey as Spider Man. He was almost too big of a geek to be Peter. I never read the comics, but I loved the cartoon, and in that Peter wasnt that big of a nerd, if I remember correctly. I also thought the movie did not do the comics justice.

  6. Sucks if he couldn't do it, but Jake is a good replacement.

  7. Well going by the comics, Maguire was perfect for Peter Parker imo

  8. Absolutely, maguire was Peter Parker. The only way they'd be able to pull it off is to advance the timeline like 10-15 years and make it like the current Spidey stories, where Peter's all old and a science teacher and stuff. But then the fickle movie audience would still see the cop out and cry bloody murder.

Anyway, how does a bad back keep Toby out? Does it take that much to climb into some spandex and let the Computer render all the action for you? Or would it be impossible to put a stuntman with a similar build into a costume that completely covers your body and let Toby do the voiceover?

How the hell is that supposed to make any sense? In any case, go read the early comics, they're available in collected form somewhere. Believe me, you can't have Peter Parker too geeky, it's just not possible. I'd almost be tempted to say that Toby wasn't geeky enough, but he was perfect as is so there isn't any reason for me to complain. I loved him in it.

  10. couldnt they just halt production until he's "better"?
