Well I finally got to play SvC for a good amount of time today, and my opinion of the game has somewhat changed.
Once I got over the mediocre backgrounds, and just focused on the characters and gameplay, my impression of the game has improved quite a bit. The sprite artwork is quite good, and in some cases, outstanding. Hugo is probably the most incredibly animated character I have ever seen in a fighting game. The Mars People look amazingly fluid and lifelike as well. Even Dmitri looks much better than he did in Darkstalkers.
My biggest gripe about the gameplay like many other people have mentioned, is that the charge down moves have been changed. You can no longer charge down and back to hold a charge. It has to be straight down. This means that a lot of characters would have to be played drastically differently than before, especially Guile and Bison.
Apart from this change the game is still damn fun to play.
Here are some brief comments on some of the characters:
Mars People - looks really weird and coool. Kinda reminds me of Shuma Gorath, with longer range.
Earthquake - seems like a real cheap character to me...his aerial butt stomp move seems to be one of the most abused in the game
Ryo - Really powered up. His dash super now hits people in the air, his flying kick now also hits higher and hits anyone trying to jump in. Seems like a top tier character.
Balrog - seems kinda worthless
Bison - plays about the same as before.
Goenitz - One of my favorite KOF bosses and it's cool to have him back.
Zero - Seems kind of weak, he can shoot a big laser bolt but that's about it.
Right, because if anything validates the existance of a handheld piece of shit, it's taking those shitty handheld games and placing them on a screen big enough so that the inherent flaws of the software is visible to all humans. Including Ray Charles.
