Thread: The Victory Thread

  1. Can't do much for the dead, Stone. Kids don't have anything to do with that.

  2. You can do something for the potentially dead, though, can't you?

Look at that and wonder what threatens Iraqi children more: coalition bombs or the actions of the bastards who put those bodies in those boxes?

  3. The sooner BOTH threats can be removed, the better. Which is why this conflict needs to be resolved ASAP.

  4. Saw footage of this on local TV, im surprised that not more of the footage Simpson and his cameraman shot was seized by the US military.

Friendly fire that killed over a dozen

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/2921743.stm

He described a "scene from hell", with all the vehicles in the convoy on fire and bodies - American and Kurdish - lying around and others burning to death right in front of him.

Those who survived suffered only light shrapnel injuries and perforated eardrums.

But despite the efforts of US special forces' medics, Mr Simpson's translator died from injuries caused by a large piece of shrapnel which hit him in the lower legs.

Simpson showing his ability to work under pressure and the hardest of situations, he did so as well in Israel and Afghanistan.
Simpson is an incredible journalist and Simpsons world on BBC world is an incredibly insightfull program.

Well it's a bit of a disaster... I was in a convoy of eight or 10 cars in northern Iraq coming up to a place that has just recently been captured. American special forces in a truck - two trucks I think - beside them, plus a very senior figure ..."[brother of Massoud Barzani, leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party]

Simpson to US soldier: "Shut up. I'm broadcasting! Oh yes, I'm fine - am I bleeding?"

US soldier: "Yes, you've got a cut."

Simpson: "I thought you were going to stop me. I think I've just got a bit of shrapnel in the leg, that's all. OK, I will - thanks a lot.

"That was one of the American special forces medics - I thought he was going to try to stop me reporting. I've counted 10 or 12 bodies around us. So there are Americans dead. It was an American plane that dropped the bomb right beside us - I saw it land about 10 feet, 12 feet away I think.

    More pictures from the scene
"This is just a scene from hell here. All the vehicles on fire. There are bodies burning around me, there are bodies lying around, there are bits of bodies on the ground. This is a really bad own goal by the Americans.

"We don't really know how many Americans are dead. There is ammunition exploding in fact from some of these cars. A very senior member of the Kurdish Republic's government who also may have been injured."

TV presenter Maxine Mawhinney: "John, just to recap for the viewers, an American plane dropped a bomb on your convoy of American special forces - many dead, many injured?"

Simpson: "I am sorry to be so excitable. I am bleeding through the ear and everything but that is absolutely the case. I saw this American convoy, and they bombed it.

They hit their own people - they may have hit this Kurdish figure - very senior, and they've killed a lot of ordinary characters, and I am just looking at the bodies now and it is not a very pretty sight."

  5. Friendly fire is horrible...but this isn't anything new. You'd probably be posting news reports about GIs stubbing their toes if you could find journalists petty enough to write them.

  6. Har har.

Its intresting becouse we got footage from a reporter on the scene(one of the best in the bussuines at that)immediatly after it happened(set up a live link as soon as he could).

Eerie footage, cameraman falling then a drop of the cameramans blood on the cameralens and the cameraman trying to wipe the blood of while Simpson comes running.

Landed our first aircraft in Baghdad International - I wonder if the Information Ministry still thinks that Iraq controls the airport?

A human shield does his job.

  8. Stone keep the Israeli/Palestine conflict out of this thread.

Simpson footage, warning images may upset some.

  9. Heheh, it's my thread - I figured it's in line with the whole "Victory" concept.

It's good to know, you know, that there are American human shields out there doing what they wanted to do, doing their job, whether it's in Iraq or in Palestine.

  10. We have another thread for that.
