Thread: Travis Charest

  1. When's all said and done, why the hell does he bother ?

It's not like regular coloring is incapable of fulfilling his artwork. It's not like this kind of coloring can't be handled by computers.

Painting is nice... but I can't be sure that it's really all that valid. His art doesn't have a "painterly" quality to it... it's high detail illustration work...

Let the colorist break out the photoshop or painter, and get on with it, Travis.

  2. Woah, woah, wooooah! Using a computer is all fine and good, but I'll never, NEVER knock a guy for doing it by hand. It's fast becoming a lost art. Personally, I'd rather see everything done by hand than on a computer, but that's just me. After all, it is "art"...

  3. If he can't oil paint fast enough and can get the same effect from other mediums for the most part why doesn't he used mixed medium to speed up the process?

    It's rather silly.

Yes but not when you have a timeline to fulfill. Doing it by hand would be just fine and downright respectable if he could get it done on time. And since he can't it's not.

He should bite the bullet and do it on computer or very little by hand. I don't care where something is done (computer or by hand) because they're both just tools to get the job done.

If you suck at drawing, and you think a computer is going to make you Cezanne then you're mistaken. It takes talent, which is why most kids can't use photoshop without plug-in filters and all of this nonsense.

Point: He shouldn't paint if he can't get it done within a reasonable amount of time.

  4. Eh, you make a point, but it's just the artist in me speaking out. It's not the same to me if you can just make a mistake all better by clicking "delete layer" or "undo paintbrush". Still, I've used Photoshop to color some stuff and it's turned out pretty well.

With that reasoning you better listen to nothing but live music...

  6. My point isn't that I don't respect his art or anything... but look at it. Does it look specifically 'painted' ? Or 'painterly' even ? To me, not in particular. My whole argument is that, yes, he is an artist and artist doing traditional skills are awesome but...

    Is there a point ?

It's kind of like having a buzzcut... and then choosing between the luxurious salon-brand conditioner and the generic drugstore brand. Sure, the expensive brand makes it look better but overall, the effect isn't all that different from doing it quick and cheap.

Now say, you're Alex Ross... then, yes, he should stick to paints... Travis Charest... yes, I appreciate the art and craftmanship but obviously the difference isn't that great... yet it seems he sacrificing a LOT of time to make that LITTLE improvement.

Again, it's all about balancing priorities, repsonsiblities and obligations vs. personal desires.

I just meant that it just doesn't feel like art to me unless you're using your hands, as opposed to a computer. If you likened it to music like 88 did it would be the difference between a band that plays their instruments and a band that is all keyboards. Of course, I don't mind a band that mixes in some keyboards into their music...aw, crap. I just killed my own arguement. I guess using Photoshop to do some coloring or whatever ain't all bad after all. But I appreciate it if someone does it all by hand.

Point. If he was just a traditional artist him being a slow-ass wouldn't be that big a deal but since he chooses to work in the comic book world, I guess you're right, he should bite the bullet and use a computer to get things done that much sooner. I mean, he just gets later and later. I'm sure almost every comic book artist out there could churn near Travis-quality stuff if they had 6 months to do one issue. On the other hand, the end result is just so beautiful that I can almost forgive the delays.

I don't know... I consider the keyboard to be an instrument.

In that sense you're right, but the end result is all that matters, especially when you're designing for clients.

Also, perhaps he's SCARED OF THE COMPUTER LIKE A SENIOR CITIZEN!!!!!
