Thread: Is this a decent home theatre setup?

  1. I've heard it in person outside of a Best Buy. It's a nice little setup for the money.

  2. Yeah, its better than mine.
Freedom is a road seldom travelled by the multitude...

  3. I'm sort of lost in setting up a home theatre system with multiple consoles and a dvd player.

I have my TV, with 1 component, 1 s-video, and 2 regualr a/v plugs. After I get this home theater, I will need a system selector, in which I will get >>> this <<<. But then, since the receiver only has one optical input, I'll need something like >>> this <<< to have my dvd player, ps2, and xbox with surround sound?

Am I doing this right? I've never messed with home theatres before.

  4. You'll need both of those if you want to play everything in component video and hear it all in 5.1.

That's what I want. Thank you.

Now...I'll have to buy special cables seperately now right? What exactly do I need?

  6. Well recievers usually have video inputs, but not all have component inputs.

Yeah but basically thats all you need for a basic surround system, just a reciever, speakers and sub... you could get a lot more complicated but I don't think your looking to spend a few grand

You can hook your PS2 with the normal audio plugs and get surround, you just won't have digital... but most games I've played don't even use it

You could hook your XBOX up with the optical and if the reciever has a coxial digital input you can use that for the DVD player.

You will need a a/v selector if you want multiple component sources hooked up to your TV... or you could always unplug them but that is too much of a pain so I would definately get the selector

What he said. This particular Kenwood doesn't have component, and I wouldn't waste my time hooking your PS2 up with optical.

  8. Ok then....what is your opinion on this setup?

    DVD Player - S-Video, 5.1 sound

GameCube - Component, ...digial sound? The 'Cube can't do 5.1 right? So I would use regular sound and it can use that Dolby ProLogic sound?

    Xbox - Component, 5.1 sound
    PS2 - Component, 5.1 sound?
    Dreamcast - S-Video, regular sound
    Saturn - S-video, regular sound

  9. Personally I wouldn't waste my time with PS2 digital, I only have mine hooked up that way since it is also my DVD player since I lack a better one as of right now... I know it can only do cut scenes in digital surround and not many games that I know of even use that.

Does your DVD output component or just s-video?

GameCube doesn't do digital but it does do Pro-Logic II, so that the Dreamcast and Saturn you hook up with the left and right RCA cables that will provide you with normal Dolby Surround just not Dolby Digital.

My DVD does both component and s-video.

So...I just hookup my 'Cube, DC, and Saturn through regular A/V cables?
