Thread: Are there any Fighting games with a good AI?

  1. Are there any Fighting games with a good AI?

Something I have just noticed about all the fighting games that I own at home, or have played in the arcades. The computor sucks, when playing 1 player. What the hell is the reasoning behind this. It seems all they do is defend, defend, defend, and do a super on ocasion, and no matter how much you change the setting the only diffrenece is that they defend more than previous setting. Are there any games, that have a good AI, that actually counter you, or react to your style and actaully try to beat you with combos and such?

  2. MvC2 on hard can beat the living crap out of me if I'm not concentrating.

    This rarely ever happens, though.

  3. VF4...they base the computer AI players in kumite on real life players--you can even train your own AI. VF4: EVO is said to be even better and even have the top tier players from Japan.

  4. Guilty Gear X2 has a decent AI. Especially that damn mission mode. I also believe SF3:3S has a pretty bad-ass CPU to fight against.

GGX2 on Maniac will PISS YOU OFF. Most of the missions in mission mode are run on Maniac (Level 32), and basically they can use frame advantages to counter your attacks with supers thanks to the "no input required" problem. You can be 1 frame away from connecting with an attack and get countered to shit.

  5. Ah, yes. VF4. Some of the Akira incarnations are down-right dirty.

  6. MK1 had incredible AI.
MK2 on XBLA plz - let the unfolding of gameplay begin!!

  7. The only game where I've noticed simulated intelligence in the AI was VF4. It seems pretty canned in everything else (although, VF4's AI had some glaring faults in it on a fundamental level, like ducking jab ->throw abuse).

Wicked! I can beat the top players in Japan just with ducking punches? Money, fame and women will all soon be mine!

In response to the original question, I believe the answer is no. Any AI that can put up a fight tends to be hyper-cheap (Mortal Kombat), have totally inhuman reaction times (Darkstalkers) or use some other crutch like doing extra damage (SF2).

There are AIs with a good balance, but nothing that accurately simulates human competition yet.

  9. TTT on ultra hard is pretty tough. It will chicken almost any reversal, reverse any throw and pretty much makes it so that you can only attack with knees and elbows all the time. You need to use a lot of rising attacks and so on.

That's true, but I never really considered that "good" AI, it's just really tough to beat sometimes. When it's apparent the computer is reading your moves, the illusion of AI has failed...It still doesn't play anything like a person.
