Thread: quick dvd drive question (pc related)

  1. quick dvd drive question (pc related)

okay finally mgs2 is out (or shipping) for pc and it's a dvd based game. obviously i need a drive. my question is more about watching movies on my pc. if i get a dvd drive do i still need to get a decoder video card of some sorts to watch movies or is the drive enough. for the record i have windows xp and a gforce 3 card in my system currently.

  2. If you get a DVD-ROM drive all that you need to watch movies is DVD software such as PowerDVD or WinDVD to watch movies. If you buy a retail drive over an OEM drive chances are that a program to watch movies may come with it.

oh...by the way.. full installation of MGS2:Substance requires almost 8 gigs of hard drive space.. craaaazy! But thats if you want little loading..you could always choose minimum installation to use up less space.

Any retail drive that you buy should come with Power DVD or some similar program that will let you watch DVD's on the computer. If you buy a bare drive, you can pick up Power DVD or Windvd cheap somewhere. You only need to use a decoder card if you have an old ass computer, something like a 200 mhz or something, or if you want to output it to a tv and surround reciever.

The irony is that the "minimum" install for MGS2:Substance is still 4 gigs (from what I recall reading).
