Thread: Destructible environments

  1. scorched earth had descructable and, um, creatable environments! sand bomb!

  2. Uh, Rampage had destructible environments.... (har har). So does War of the Monsters for that matter, and Zone of the Enders (to some degree). It plays a really large role in MechAssault as well (destroying buildings used for cover, bridges, ice-covered lakes that mechs get stuck in if the ice breaks, etc.).

Seems like Red Faction I/II tried to do something useful with it, which is a step forweward (it's just eye-candy in most games). Level design can be an issue too, as was mentioned before, because it would be hard to design something if it all can just be leveled. The bridges in WarCraft III used to be destroyable, but, it messed up the balance on some maps, so they had to take it out.

I'm well aware of gun games. It's easy for those kind of games to have destructible environments because they're on-rails. I just wish games in general would have them.

  4. Can't forget King of the Monsters or Street Fighter II, nice destructible stuff in there too.

  5. I n defense of Red Faction 1 there were points in the game where you can blast through the ground and get to another room or borrow down then up to get past a wall. Also you can punch holes in bridges and they will collapse and everyone on said bridge is toast. They had these in the singleplayer missions and multiplayer deathmatch. Yeah--it could be done better but GeoMod is definitely a good attempt. What was the first game with destructible environments? Dig-Dug?

  6. Well, the pellets in Pac-Man count as the environment, then Pac-Man could count. If not, then Dig Dug would probably be it.

  8. Well, it all depends. There's no point in having it in some games when the memory could be allocated to other areas.

In a game line Unreal Championship or games specifically formulated for high action and explosive play, then definitely. Red Faction implemented Geomod technology and the game itself was decent, but all in all there was no point to it.

Except for a few parts in which you could blow holes around doors if you didn't have a key, it was a useless function. They promised things like shooting the floor out from underneath enemies and it never happened.

One of the things the game did RIGHT, though, was the shattering glass effect and if you like that, then Minority Report is your beconing haven.

Worms! I loved drowning the enemy's worm by making them fall into a huge hole created by my Holy Hand Grenade. What a great series. I hope the 3D one is just as good.

Not a first person Shooter, but Charge N Blast for the Dreamcast has the most Enviorment destruction in a Videogame that I have seen, sadly that's the main draw for this game. You can blow up huge buildings and have the tower crumble on your enemy or Boss. Real fun game if your into blowing shit up. The game can be had for like $10 new, Got one for that price at Amazon a month or so back.
