I was just going to give props to M.U.L.E... then I remembered that Live '95 was the bomb, too.
Before they became the Borg-like entity they are today, Electronic Arts was one of the best publishers in the business. I just feel like paying tribute to some games from their pre-Genesis days.
Archon(1983) - This was a brilliant game from Freeman, Westfall, and Reiche. Two sides, set up in chess-like fashion on a board, face off against each other. When characters on the board meet, the game switches to an arcade-ish action mode where they duel it out. There were a few sequels to this game but they were quite different.
M.U.L.E.(1985) - Dan Bunten's M.U.L.E. was revolutionary for multiplayer strategy games.
One on One(1983) - EA shows their early sports game might with this quality basketball game.
Skate or Die(1987) was rad.
There are plenty I didn't list. What are your favorite early EA games?

Wow, EA really was a fantastic company in the pre-Genesis days. Some of my favorite games were Mail Order Monsters, Hard Hat Mack, Racing Destruction Set, Pinball Construction Set, and of course the immortal Starflight.

Skate or Die. Hot damn. Freestyle was a frantic blast, but I could never get a handle of the High Jump contest as a kid...
The NES version also has the most wicked awesome cover art, too. Neato.
Skate or Die... That was a great great game, I only played the NES port and I loved it

Their Genesis years were great too, especially NHL Hockey, The Immortal, Road Rash and Desert Strike.
