Thread: Sonic Mega Collection: Smash Pack all over again or quality emulation?

  1. Sonic Mega Collection: Smash Pack all over again or quality emulation?

What I'd REALLY love is if the slowdown was somehow fixed for the 2 player mode in Sonic 2, I loved that. How is the emulation all around, is it accurate or superior to the original Genesis versions? Also, are the bonus materials any good? These are important issues to me since I already own all the games on Genesis, and now that I have a g/f my disposable income is a lot less disposable.

  2. From all accounts I've heard, the emulation is spot-on. There isn't a save feature though, like there was in Sonic Jam, and I don't believe you can do the spin dash in Sonic 1, like you could in Sonic Jam.

  3. indeed.

I did a review of the game too. ^^

It's a perfect emulation of each Sonic game. On the bright side, that means 100% faithfulness to the way you remember these games. On the other hand...there are no 'new moves' in earlier Sonics nor is there a save-state option. Only Sonic 3 can save.

Then again, where else can you find all the Genny Sonics, plus the 'lock-on' versions of each, Flicky, and Ristar?

  4. Hero: Umm.....in my Genesis game collection? :P Hehe I know what you mean it is pretty friggin cool, and Ristar is one of my all time favorite games the novelty of having them all on one disc on Cube is almost worth it alone for me. BTW I'm going to read your review now

  5. There's no big extras on Mega Collection to justify the purchase if you have the Genny games. Of course, you do have the advantage of better video outputs than the Genesis (component video.. neato)... Rent if you're still not sure, but you may want to consider buying something else, like Zelda, Rayman or some such.

  6. I suggest you pick up Rayman 3. Its one of the funnest games I have played all year.

Zelda is VERY GOOD as well. However, I am at a really irritating part of the game. The pacing has just seemed to turn to absolute crap. I don't think I have played a Zelda game before that does this. I was going along fine having lots of fun and all of a sudden everything about the game sucks. Its something about Triforces and other things that don't make much sense when compared to the rest of the game... I had to turn it off due to pure boredom earlier. This has some of the coolest ideas in a Zelda game, it has some over used ideas, and it has some very retarded moments. Hopefully the pacing picks back up on this game. For right now though, I think I can honestly say I had more fun with Rayman 3...

You should skip the Sonic Megacollection and pick up Rayman 3. I promise you that Rayman is at least as good as any 2-D platformer. Plus, $39.99 is the perfect price for it. Everyone should pick it up as soon as possible.

  7. Thanks for the suggestions guys. I already own Zelda, currently playing it, I love it but I'm also at a really annoying part, I dunno if it's the same annoying part but I don't want to give spoilers. I adored Rayman 2 on N64 and later Dreamcast, I consider it one of the best 3d platformers ever. There's just so many new games I want out for Cube right now between Splinter Cell, Burnout 2, Rayman 3, ect. BTW What's the difference between the different builds of Rayman 3, is the Cube version the best one?

  8. If you have a Game Boy Advance its probably good to pick up the cube version since it hooks up to the GBA version of Rayman 3.

I have the Xbox version, and personally I think its slightly better than the Cube version, but not by much. You really can't tell the difference between the Cube and Xbox versions unless you have them side by side. I noticed the Xbox version has a little better frame rate, and the camera is slightly less jerky (although the camera in general is pretty good). Also, the Xbox version has different lighting effects in certain levels...

They both have mini games that the other version doesn't have as well. Although I don't consider the mini games a factor in the buying decision because they all bored me after about two minutes.

Overall, you can't go wrong with either version of Rayman 3. The Xbox and Cube versions are practically identical in my opinion because the differences are very subtle. Honestly, the only reason I bought the Xbox version was because I have about 25 gamecube games and only 10 Xbox games. I felt like I was ignoring my Xbox, so I waited an extra couple weeks to get the Xbox version. If I was forced to make a choice though, I would pick the Cube version just because I like the controller better than the Xbox's controller.

  9. Thanks for all the info Mag, Cube version it is

My Genesis RGB cable begs to differ.
