Thread: Tetris's place in the puzzle world?

  1. Tetris's place in the puzzle world?

I've noticed that many people list this game as their favorite game of all time. EGM did it in their top 100, zerodash or someone named it as their fave in some thread, and countless others think of it as the best puzzle game of all time.

I'm not a hardcore puzzle guy, so I'd like ask anyone well versed in this genre: How exactly does this work. Is it considered the best because of it's simplicity? Or that it doesn't have any(or less)exploitable flaws in contrast to other games in the genre?

    Please explain.

  2. Sometimes simplicity is the most important thing... Tetris doesn't have to be gimmicky to take up your time, its just simple and easy but infinately deep... the strategy that can go into that game is very interesting... also to touch on the flaws thing, there aren't any. it's simple nature made it perfect...

  3. Like how Herzog Zwei is to C & C? Or how SF2 is to MVC2?

  4. IMHO, it's popular because of it's simple gameplay (on the surface), easy software implementation, and no two games are ever played out the same way. It also doesn't hurt that it introduced the puzzle game genre to the masses sorta like what Doom did for FPSs.

I'd still take Puzzle Fighter over it though.

  5. Yeah... it's nice to play something that's good because of it's core gameplay not because of gimmicks... it like how all these new Platformer characters look like ass because they're complicated looking, but old ones like mario and sonic are classy because if their simple design...

  6. It's considered the best because people don't understand how to play Puyo Puyo well.

It's a really accessible game, that pretty much everyone has played, and you can stick in front of anyone and they'll be amused. That's the upshot, anyway.

Obvious copout. I've seen more people play Solitaire on their PCs than Tetris.

    Because it comes with Windows...

  9. I like me some Tetris...

But the true heir to the puzzle game crown has gots to be the Puyo Puyo.

  10. Tetris is for people too unskilled to play Puyo Puyo. The chains are way beyond Tetris' limited lines concept.
