Thread: The Evils of Console-centrism

  1. The thing is, the PC can't be viewed as just a gaming machine. It's a hobby in itself, without even factoring games into it. Think of it as a nice car.

  2. I was big time into computer gaming in the 80's, but the price of admission was a bit steap. I've been console gaming ever since and just recently picked up an HP computer with 2GHZ processor and 256MB of RAM for $420.I'm now looking forward to games like Jedi Outcast, Marrowmind and good old Starcraft.

During all those years of console gaming, there have been quite a few titles on the PC that have peaked my interest. I missed out on great Star Wars games like X-Wing VS. Tie Fighter, Jedi Knight and the best version of Rogue Squadron. I'm looking forward to playing a solid Air Combat game and the PC has plenty to choose from.

Console gaming will always be my favorite, but there are times when a game of a different pace and mind logic are of interest to me and the PC does a fine job of balancing out, what the console can't offer.

  3. I've got a PC that's pretty good for gaming, but there's so much to play on consoles already that I barely even look at it. Once in a while a game will come along like Warcraft III that I'll buy and play a ton, but I'm just too poor to keep up to date on it. So it sits in the corner collecting dust 99% of the time.

  4. To be fair, I never had any interest in console gaming until I spent an afternoon with Mario, so it would likely take a similar experience with PC gaming to get me hooked. However, my girlfriend is a PC gaming fiend, and she hasn't shown me anything I've found interesting, and I've spent some time with Warcraft II and SimCity 3000 and enjoyed it, but not enough to really go out and play them on my own.

Everything people have said against the PC format itself(patches, installing, games having to deal with a million different configurations, expense, etc.), I agree with. I have serious issues with the PC format. Aside from my dislike of these things, the PC has great games that either aren't available elsewhere or if they do have console ports, they are far too downgraded in the control department.

Believe me, I would be extremely happy if someone could make a console controller with the aiming accuracy of a mouse. VGA support standard in every console would be nice too.
