Here's a theory a guy on another board came up with for the film.
I thnk The last 30 minutes of the film never happened. Charlie has a split personality, Donald is his alter ego - the person he wants to be. Charlie found himself writing two screenplays at the same time, the one he wanted to write (the 3 in Donalds style and the one he could'nt write - the Orchid ) he even went to class as donald to learn how to write a 'mainstream popular' film. But Charlie realising that he could not finish the Orchid had to let donald take over. So Charlies film ends as soon as he finishes his drink with the lecturer McKee and decides to let Donald finish the film. ( Maybe he got drunk and for one evening Donald had full controll over the ecript) So in the context of the film untill that point it is based on real events from the book, everything after that is fiction. right up untill they woke up next to the log and that is when Charlie took back over. Charlie i think would of re-wrote the script without his alter egos ending was it not for the fact that the script being very late.
I think that the 3 storyline is supposed to represent Charlies world,
There are a lot of pointers to this in the screenplay for the 3, remember that Donald decided to have is characters burst into a song? thinking it was strange untill he rembembered Casablanca? What about Charlie and Donald singing Happy Together?? Charlie saying at the start that he would not put car chases, drugs or guns into his screenplay! He said he felt "passionate " about it, Passion was the central theme to this whole movie, Charlie would not lose his passion just to have a good ending, but by using Donald he could justify it.
Once Charlie had let Donald finish the book he realised what he had done and killed Donald, he had got what he really wanted - an ending for a screenplay he did not want to write anymore - and he then killed his 'brother' in the process clearing his mind and healing himself?? Remember that Donald would do everything that McKee told him to do, and would never break his rules!
So donald would never have had the crocodile show up and save Charlies life!
As the McKee was very clear on the "Duex ex Machines" ending.
A lot of people have been talking about the 3, and if the above scenario is true asking who is the girl that donald talks about as the 3rd personality?
I think the third girl could be Donalds girlfriend, as if he did not exist then how could he have a girlfriend - she was not Charlies!!
Hm, is that a theory about the ending of the film? I'm not trying to be a dick at all, or anything, but that guy's theory seemed to pretty obviously be the way the film was meant to end. Are there any other theories you've seen that make more or even comparable sense within the context of the movie?
I thought the film was quite imaginative, and interesting, and fun to watch, but it did drag on a bit. Still, it was conceptually brilliant, but it wasn't quite as good as Being John Malkovich.
And like Stone said, what that guy said is pretty much nothing special.
