I know firsthand just how horrible the quality of the PS1 was, everyone I know that owned one had at least 1 die on them. Anyone have similar experiences with PS2, or did Sony step up and build a durable console this time? I've heard a lot of horror stories about PS2, just wondering how well the members of the board have fared with it. I would say the only reason I still don't have a PS2 is because of how lousy the build quality of PS1 was, and I'm not at all a fan of consoles dying on me.

I'm not rating the system based on software, I know it has lots of good games. I mean simply in terms of how well it's built, if the laser dies quickly or if it overheats like PS1 for example. Matt go cyber your internet girlfriend, that way you'll only be leaving 1 person unsatisfied.

I've never had any problems with mine. I bought my original at launch and later traded it to Freek, don't think either of us have had any problems with it.
The new one I picked up back in January hasn't been giving me any problems either. Other than the occasionally loud fan and low volume quality on DVD movies, I've never really had a problem with the system.

My first PS2 started giving me problems the first day I owned it. The system would freeze up during loading screens... and this happened with all of my games, so back to the store it went.
My second PS2 makes weird grinding noises whenever the disc tray is opened or closed. It also sometimes has trouble loading DVD games, and lens cleaners don't seem to help anymore.
