Thread: Midway Announces The Suffering

  1. Midway Announces The Suffering

Midway has announced that it will throw its head into the Survival Horror ring with The Suffering, coming to Gamecube, Xbox, and Playstation 2 later this Fall. As Torque, a convicted murderer, you will fight your way through 9 different levels set inside of a maximum security prison. Standing in your way are a dozen different, and grotesque enemies; specters who represent the manner of execution used to end them.

Adding his talent to the creature design is Stan Winston, the four-time Academy Award winner famous for creating such movie creatures as the dinosaurs of Jurassic Park and Edward Scissorhands. Midway is looking to place a lot of emphasis on the look of the game and in the details of the blood and gore. They've also announced a couple of interesting concepts they've put into the game, such as the ability to transform Torque into a monstrous alter-ego, and that you can interact with other inmates and decide their fate. Not much else is known at this time, but look for more details to be revealed soon.

TNL will have those details as they become available, so stay tuned.

  2. At the risk of condeming a game before I even play it:

Anyone ever look at Midway and feel bad? They were one of the original big-name game developers and that image lasted for a nice amount of time. I mean, a decade ago they were formidable. Mortal Kombat and NBA Jam were really big games for them. I know many people who bought a PSX just because of MK3.

Today they don't seem to put out as much quality as they once did. I wonder if thier time has passed forever.

  3. I liked MK: Deadly Alliance a lot.

    A lot.

I really haven't given it solid playing time, but a lot of people say that. Personally I really liked BioFreaks. Pretty sure I'm one of 5 people who did.

But even if we agree that MK:DA is an awesome game, Midway still isn't the powerhouse they once were in the 80's and early 90's. Not to keep beating the same drum, but Mortal Kombat was the alpha and the omega in the day. Not so with DA. At least not as far as I can see, it doesn't preoccupy magazines and game discussions like MK and MK2 did. NBA Jam was it's own phenomon too.

Maybe all that will change, who knows.

  5. Yea Blaine... what happened to Midway was unfortunate. Basically what happened was that they were going hella strong, doing great, making tons of money, everyone loved them. Then, after the mediocre Mortal Kombat 3, they kinda got hit with hard times. They just kinda slipped and slided, and got hurt by the collapse of the arcade industry. They put a lot of their eggs into the NFL Blitz basket (when that came out it was a huge hit), but people eventually got bored with it. To survive, they kinda stripped down their business to its very core. I give them credit for not folding, though - they just shrunk.

And I mean they've had their high points - Rush 2049 was amazing. They're just NOT the same company as they used to be, probably because they dont have as much money as they used to.
