Click: I dig that second pic.

Stormy: Nice powerlines. Reminds me of the artwork from the album "Rising for sunset" by Gene. You've probably never heard of them, but I am mentioning it anyway. It's a compliment.

Mode 7: Very nice, now spill the beans.

Kidnemo: If you don't mind my asking, how much did your new cam set you back? It looks like pretty good quality.

I am planning on getting a digicam soon. Last week I was on holiday with my parents and my mum had a new camera. It was an Olympus, er, Somethingorother.. bleh, I forget the model number. It took me a while to get used to it but it takes incredible quality pictures. I had a lot of fun with it and now I want my own.

I will attach one of the pictures I took. If anyone is curious it was taken near a lake somewhere in the Laurentians.

  2. K3v> I like the shot of the building.

SGGG> I picked up the DSC717, check out the the product page for it here . Retail on it is $999, but I picked mine up for 695 online.

I did a ton of research before I finally settled on the 717. I used to be huge into SLR photography, so I wanted something that would come as close to the manual experience as possible, without dropping the 3K on a digital-SLR.

10 times zoom (with some very nice macro features), 5 megapixels, Carl Zeiss lens, and cool night photography options made it the sure sell for me.

From what I've read, for less than a grand, This is the camera to get. If you want to learn more, check out:

dpreview - lots of good info, decent forums

    steves digicams - great reviews

    Hope this helps!

  5. Beautiful shots, Click. Can't go wrong with lakeside symmetry.

    Such as? I'm intrigued!

    Personally I'm lusting after this.

    From the website:

    • NightShot. Infra-red illumination system, NightFraming infra-red assist helps composition in adverse lighting

    • Twilight, Twilight Portrait (slow shutter flash synch) & with 5 presets and 1 push manual calibration

Basically it performs very well under lowlight conditions, better than some cameras twice it's price.

Something with it's sensor and how it processes light from what I've read. It also uses some of the same type of technology used in night vision stuff, so that you can take photos in complete darkness (without a flash) and you get some cool photos.

Lemme find the link, but some of the shots taken in complete darkness are awesome.

That Olympus is a good looking camera. I'm guessing it will be more, but I was checking out the 5050 also. It's supposed to be a really good camera as well.

That'd be much appreciated. I'm quite frustrated with the way my camera functions in even remotely low light.

Edit: that Olympus is around the 600-700 USD range.

  8. Unless you really need the zoom, it would be worth it imo to get something with a little more mega-pixel action, like the 5050. 3.2 vs. 4 (or especially 5) megapixels would make a big difference.

    Take a look at www.pricegrabber.com

That's where I found the retailer for my camera (newegg.com), and I saved a nice chunk of change.

    Edit:

Here is a gallery that someone did using the same camera as me. The photos were taken with no flash, and in very lowlight (or no lighting) conditions.

  9. Thanks. I finally starting screwing with the exposure and effects settings last night... Dunno what was stopping me from doing so earlier.

  10. Oooh my. Very neat. Has a kind of eerie quality to them.

But yeah, the zoom feature is the main draw for the 750. I could have managed some amazing pictures by now if I had a decent zoom.
