Thread: What do you do for a living?

  1. I am kind to the people, I just scream at them in my head and clench my fists and whisper things at them when their back is turned. But I am kind to them face to face, they just don't know that I would like to shove a brick down their neck.

Hm. Sorry to hear that. breaking in is the hardest thing about starting out...though I wouldn't take it too personally. GMR, Play among other outlets are inudated with proposals like yours all the time.

Out of curiousity, who have you written for where your work is published (at least online)?

I can tell you right off the bat that many of these places aren't going to pick you up for a freelance job because the availability comes and goes, and usually it's for a full-time position where you're expected to relocate. It becomes a matter of being at the right place at the right time (or hearing about something). I can look at a few of your samples, but I can't forward them to anyone. That step has to be saved for you...

I wouldn't also be expecting to make any money either, heh at least immediately - especially without significant experience. One valuable resource that helps a lot of current freelancers is that they possess a debug unit which makes them a valuable asset for any said publication. Though, even for those (like myself) who actually lack the hardware, there are ways around it. It's extremely rare that any outlet will snatch up someone off the rack. Like most places, they usually search from within the industry, or friends knowing a friend knowing a friend...

You should probably start out by writing for some online site or something. Focus on getting exposure from an estalished foundation and then build from there. If you're really good, the money will come later...

Thanks for the advice. Well, I do full-time PR for Penn State University so there are tons of press releases that I have done online. I also do a lot of feature stories for our print publications and do an online/print newsletter as well. I also do fiction writing and have been published in a few publications. I also have writen for local mags like Voices of Central Pennsylvania and a few others newspapers and such. But I don't want to only be a journalist/fiction writer -- I also want to get into fun freelance, so besides ToyFare (and soon to be Anime Invasion, I hope) I don't write for any other sites/mags...so I guess I just need to write reviews and such for online sites and work from there...can you let me know when there are openings on this site, so maybe I can do some work? I am also good with Web and print design and have lots of programs at my disposal for these purposes...

  10. Xeno Gigas, could I by chance move down to Columbus with you, and work there too ^.^
