Thread: Aren't you glad the DC died?

  1. Well you should be comparing the Saturn to Playstation, the PSX was only released a few monthes after and that is because Sega jumped the gun and released the Saturn earlier

    I think you forgot one

    Neo Geo > Genesis

  2. While I am not happy about the early demise of DC (thanks Sony), I can at least take some consolation in the fact that Sega will BE AROUND making games... their hardware business is really killing their profits. I hope them going software lets them stay afloat and profitable so they can continue to make their awesome games. If not, then there is no justice in this world

Most of those comparisons are arguable. The Master System was better than the NES, I'll give you that, but the Genesis wasn't superior to the SNES and it's not hard for any console to be better than the TG-16 (it was a joke and yet some great games still came out). Saturn is clearly better then 3D0 but not the Playstation and the DC cannot be compared to the N64 because the N64 was basically the only 64bit system to hit the market. DC should be compared to the PS2/GC/Xbox and it's clearly inferior to all of those. The fact is Sega has "jumped the gun" on releasing it's hardware since post-master system days. And since they are always trying to get their systems out first, the advancement in hardware technology passes them up for the competition.

Don't get me wrong. I really like Sega machines but they've consitently screwed the pooch with their hardware strategy which is why they are no longer in the hardware market.

I disagree. Being first can be an advantage. If the SNES came out before the Genesis, I don't think Sega would have had a chance. In virtually every console era, it's not the most technologically advanced that wins.

Sega's proven that being first to the market doesn't equal success and the SNES (due mainly to Streetfighter 2) was killing the Genesis until Mortal Kombat came out. But the SNES came back later and gained another market advantage with the release of DKC which also sold a ton more systems back when the 16bit market was considered dead and everyone was starting to ride the 32bit wave. But I will agree that it's not always the most advanced hardware that wins. Just look the history of the portable market for example.

  6. I hate the words 'dead' and 'console' is the same sentence.

Systems only 'die' when you stop playing them. The DC has years to go, in mine eyes.

  7. Click Stick, you and I share the same philosophy. I've been saying that for years now. The only way a console is dead is if you let it be.

  8. I also feel that the Xbox and DC are similar for some reason, I don't know why.
    Barf! Barf! Barf!

  9. I actually think it was too soon. I think they should have waited another year at least, perhaps even waited for next gen platforms to start to rear their heads, and pledged themselves to a single console which has yet to be released. Sega tossed themselves headfirst into the third part multi-platform market and realized the hardway just how important a unified fanbase is.

But regardless of that they should have kept a tighter lid on the whole ordeal. The fading consumer confidence due to rumors really hurt sales. If they never discontinued the hardware, but simply cut production by alot, it would have done alot to instill consumer confidence, and DC could have easily ridden it out in some capacity to the present day. Even the PSX still sees budget titles.

Sega didn't just drop the DC, they dropped it like a ton of bricks and won't even give the fans low buget titles and naomi ports that it knows would make them a quick buck. That was wrong.

I'm glad they went 3rd party, but I don't think they handled the transition well, or as well as they could have.

  10. Considering we could've had Shenmue 3 by now and that I have no choice but to import future titles, no.
