Carmack mentioned that Doom 3 will run on an 8500. At lower resolutions, without taking high level anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering into account, the 8500 line isn't a whole lot slower than the 9500+ line. Seriously, I've run both. The 9700 probably pulls way ahead when you run at obscene resolutions with lots of filtering, but I don't run games that way.
This whole ATI vs. NVIDIA thing is getting old. My experience running both a Geforce4 4200 and Radeon 9500 on a 2.4GHz Pentium 4 with 768MB DDR333: they are, for all intents and purposes, identical. Maybe things change when you run 1600x1200 with 8x anti-aliasing, but I saw no practical difference between the 2 cards. I have to laugh when I see people arguing over cards that score within 500 points of each other in 3DMark. It's like pissing in wind.
