Thread: Xband (and miscellaneous pre-networking platforms)

  1. I never got into X-Band, even though I saw it many a time in the stores and the prospect of playing Mario Kart with my buddy really fancied my tickle, but I just didn't think it would be possible to convince my parents to foot the monthly bill for it - they were really paranoid about paying for online access/gaming back then because they thought it would be the equivalent of joining a book or music club: once they pull you in, it's impossible to get out (which, oddly enough, kind of ended up being true given my tendency to go into withdrawal symptoms if I'm away from the internet for too long )

Didn't take the plunge with online gaming till DC took it to the mainstream, but X-Band was a very bold first step that unfortunately didn't really do as well as it could've.
    omg TNL epics!

  2. I'll prolly come back to this thread later, but I was one of the OG Xband players that got in on the craze. fun times for the most part, and a precursor to the existing console gaming networks many of us now enjoy today!

  3. Please do bahn...I'm surprised that few people here played Xband. A bit of a bummer really.

Regus: Awesome pics, but the last 2 are the same images. I didn't have SC for long (it never really caught on) but it was a hell of a idea that worked really well.

  4. Rumpy> What pic is repeated? I'll repost the other one.

  5. "Now playing" with the genre categories

  6. Ah, okay, that's weird, because it doesn't repeat for me:

  7. I spent many a hours on the genny xband playing Madden 95/96, SSF2T & MK2. I've always sucked at fighting games so Madden was where I shined. I was playing football in Middle school and obsesed with Madden from the begining (untill about '97) and when I heard you would be able to play other people over the phone I think I literlarly shat myself. I was forced to only play people in my own area code but for some odd reason Columbus was always jammin, it was hard to not find someone to play.

I beleive my SN was Akuma or Zero Akuma, I duno, something with Akuma in it. Too bad I never got to try out the SNES one, although I wasn't really into Mario Kart back then the Maddens were better on the genny.
Currently Playing: Final Fantasy V Pixel Remaster (PC), Let's Build a Zoo (PC) & Despot's Game (PC)

there are A LOT of players who did over at SRK.

  9. I remember reading about both services, but thought that I'd end up with long distance charges I could'nt pay, so I passed on getting an X-Band. They never offered the Sega Channel where I lived, but I heard that the only version of Megaman on the Genesis, was available through the Sega Channel.
