It was never anywhere near as popular as R-Type but I think Irem's 1989 shooter X Multiply is pretty good. It was ported to the Saturn in a compilation with Image Fight.

Big fan here. I think it holds up to the R-Type games, but easier. Level 6 kicks my ass though.
