The sad part is that MS will have to pander to Japanese consumers if they want to gain a foothold in Japan. They will have to buy established Japanese developers and have them crank out sequels to long-running series. They'll have to do what they do best: stifle the industry.

I think they might have to forget about Japan. As of right now the Xbox is the most powerful system and 3rd parties don't seem to care in Japan because Japan does not care that its the most powerful. They care more about if the System looks cool on their shelf and I think they don't like that fact that its an american system. The only thing that will save the Xbox in Japan is a huge series making the jump to the Xbox, something like Final Fantasy or Dragon Warrior, and thats not going to happan, and 3rd parties arn't going to want to do that because of low the sales of the System are. Microsoft will either have to keep trudging in Japan and wait for a lucky break or cut them off.
Barf! Barf! Barf!
ms could make the system as small and friendly as they want and get all the "great" support in the world but it still wouldnt sell. its called mindset, and the japanese have one helluva hard on for their own goods.
exactly...nothing else would work.Originally posted by Delta

what ever they do, it won't be what any of us think or care about.
To win Japan over, they simply need to include an underage school girl wearing no panties in every box.

We all know Microsoft has decent positioning in North America and Europe, but the Xbox is damn near dead in Japan. What do you think Microsoft can do for the next generation to win over Japan? My ideas are these:
1) Outsource the manufacture of the Japanese Xbox 2 to a Japanese company, perhaps one of the other large electronics companies competing with Sony.
3) MS should really push to gain an exclusive from Square Enix and Konami to launch with the next Xbox. It could be a killer opportunity to even have one of these exclusives as a pack-in at launch.

1) They could use the manufacturer of their 3-d hardware, as the one backing the Nextbox. They've kind of burned the bridge with NEC have'nt they? NEC has a decent reputation over there.
3) They did have DOA3 and it was the selling point for purchasing an Xbox in Japan. They'll need more than just the names of Square, Enix and Konami on the developers list, to sell their console. Launch titles are great and all, but it's a continued release of great 3rd party titles, that will keep the consumers coming. Something that has'nt happened with their current console. I'm really surprised it's selling as well as it has, in the other 2 regions.
