Paying tribute to my most played console of all time....
Back when the soft clay of my gaming taste was being molded I spent much of my time playing games like Operation Wolf, R Type, Outrun, and Galaxy force. I never was a huge fan of the consoles back then, the NES was a terrible console in my eyes( but that's changed alot now that I went back and played the games via emulation), and the C64 had some fun diversions... but I spent most of my time playing the aforementioned arcade classics.
I mean just look at how R Type would look on the NES. And the Space Harriers port is one of the worst games ever.
For some inexplicable reason I got my own Genesis during the summer of 90. Initially, the whole charm of the Mega Drive was ability to play games like Burning Force, Golden Axe, and Outrun without having to spend all of my time on the coin ops. Sonic was the game that had changed me though, it had lit my passion for games on fire opened my mind to console gaming as a whole. I'll never forget playing this game day and night for months on end.=\
Enough of the poorly written rant... here are a bunch of my favorites.
Sonic
My favorite plattformer of all time. The 5 genesis sonic games were great, but the original will always be my favorite.

Rocket Knight Adventures
Directed by the fellow who worked on the Contra and Suikoden series, this is the best 16 bit plattform game after the SMW and the Sonic series.

Landstalker

*shudder* This game is a lesson to who ever makes action adventure games on how to make puzzles. The satisfaction from solving these easily ranks along with Level 5 and the Opera scene from FF6 as one of the greatest moments for me in gaming history.=\
Monster World 4

A strong candidate for the best action RPG of all time. IMO it's a better game than A Link to the Past. Unfortunately, this game never made it stateside due to SOA's stupidity.

One of the best ARPG's ever, if you categorize it in that genre. This game badly needs an update with a GTA like engine.
Shining Force 2

Lunar: The Silver Star Story

Shin Megami Tensei and Tales of Phantasia rip this game a new one, but this was the best RPG game to be localized in that era. The characters are some of the most human I've ever seen.

Treasure's rookie effort. This game destroys Contra in every way, and the best co op player in any game ever. Metal Slug 3 and X are superior games in my eyes, mainly due to their manic shootemup school of design, but they can't touch this game in certain areas like Boss design.

Another game that never made it to the states.I think it's the best over head acttion shooter of all time, and it puts the legend of valkrie, purika daisakusen, and Mercs to shame.

I'd rate this game above most modern RTS. I love how the focus is on actual strategy as opposed to micro management.

Nah, the Genny's aged just fine for me. Shinobi III will never be equalled for a long, long time, if ever, as far as action games go.
Almost everytime I go to Funcoland I pick a one or two random $5 carts to see what I might have missed. Great fun to be had, and the visuals still look great in RGB.

I agree with you on Landstalker, I think Contra HC is better then Gustar but that is a really close one. I noticed that you had Monster World 4 there with English text. Was a version released that had that or is that a text patch for an emulator? Overall you have a really cool list here.

Shadowrun...why is it that when I'm approached by enemies I SLOW DOWN to the point where I can't even POINT MY GUN at them without getting attacked?!?! Oh yeah, its shit. This is one of the worst games ever made, why does anyone praise it?!?!

The genesis was, is and will always be great. So many amazing games across so many different genres. The only games I can't go back and play again are the sports games. They didn't age well. Any time I get cocky after beating a modern game and start thinking I am good at vidoe games, I go back and play Chakan or Contra on the genesis. The puts me back in my place.
