You need it for multiplayer, not single-player.
I'm confused now. First you say you need the GBA to use the menu, now you're saying you don't. Which is it?

I dont know what the hell to think. The game at least looks interesting. Gameplay wise I dont know what to think.

My copy is reserved, with my bonus GBA > GC link cable, woo!
I'm excited for this. The videos I've seen, and the impressions I've read make me hope I'll have as much fun with this as I did with multiplayer Secret of Mana back in the day.
I already have two GBA's and two link cables, so I should be set.
My friend reserved his copy, got a poster and the link cable as well. Another friend is getting an SP very soon, so he's saving up for FFCC now... I have an SP and all, and I could get it cheap sicne I have a gift certificate to use around then, but... I don't know. I've been rather put off by this as of late and I don't think it's something I'll rush out and buy. Square's been letting me down. But I will admit, there's something about them working with Nintendo that makes me incredibly curious about the game. I'll wait and see what my friends think of it (but they're Sqaure-whores and wont say a thing against any FF, so that wont matter too much).
I'm still debating on this one. Since I have a GBA, I'm sure my girlfriend wouldn't mind being 2P (and we could take turns or whatever), but it would require me moving the GameCube back out to the living room to be played in glorious, lovely, super-sharp composite. It might be fun, although horrible to look at.
I'm leaning heavily towards Tales of Symphonia for my next GC epic fix.
