Thread: Culdcept II Expansion coming to the US via NEC & Capcom

  1. Oh no! Now it will have horrible dubbing!
(only people who played the game will get the above half-joke)

I wonder if the PS2 version had online play like the DC version did and if so will it be kept for the US release.

I also wonder if this expanded version fixes some of the balance issues in the DC version, like how it takes a damn eternity to get a good deck, especially when your hour plus battles often yield rewards of crappy cards which you already have. This is the one problem that stopped me from playing an otherwise excellent game.

You know, I think I asked the rep about the Online thing... and she said No... I'm pretty sure... yeah...

I would hope that the Expansion version fixed any balance issues. I think that was the point of it.

What? Didn't like the way the announcer excitedly announced the names of the cards during battle?

The PS2 version supported the modem and HD. You could connect to the Culdcept website and download data. I can't quite read Japanese, so I can't confirm if network play was in it. Given that it supported the PS2 modem/BB device, I can't see why not.

Given the game's CCG-like nature, I believe that they intended players to play the game for hours just to earn every card, be it through single player or multi-player.

As for what the game adds upon the DC version: every subsequent version of Culdcept has improvements based upon feedback from the previous version. I know that they fixed a few unbalanced cards, added some new ones, and added 'medals.' I have no idea what the medals do, as I haven't played the PS2 version much at all. Supposedly, more maps were also added to the PS2 version.

Can't wait for the game to come out.

Great plan, but whenever I played it would give me, on average, one new card and four ones I already had. One time it gave me four wolves all at once! Without any sort of trading card system like Card Fighters has this is a major drawback.

I'm a little surprised Sony approved its release though considering the game is entirely in 2D, even though those 2D graphics are great.

  5. Thanks for that feature on smaller publishers, Kabuki - that's just the kind of thing I've been searching for through all the E3 coverage - small Japanese games by small developers and small publishers. Plenty of syrupy goodness there.

I remembered that Chulip title and pulled up the news post from NCS that talks about the game:

There is hope for the lovelorn, especially when a cupid-like mailman is on the job. Set in a Japanese town from what appears to be a 1960s or 1970s time-frame, Chulip follows the travels of a courier who delivers messages of love, gifts, and the occasional kiss to those who are seeking love and/or recovering from lost love. As a brave and impartial messenger, the mailman will kiss both men and women indiscriminately as he relays sentiments of love from one person to another. Set in a 3-D overhead-view game world, players travel throughout the town on daily rounds and picks up love assignments from the citizens whom he delivers mail to. Eventually, relationships may develop based on how well the love gets spread around, with different people requiring more "work" or persistence to find love. This work comes in the form of puzzles in the game which may be solved to help a lovesick character move further along the road to romance. Chulip offers an interesting premise which goes against the grain, but it's heartening to see publishers willing to take chances on niche products that may become sleepers.

Sounds incredibly niche, and fun. Natsume has one of the most interesting lineups this year.

  6. Glad Tokidoki could be of service, jiji

When he said Chulip was weird, he really meant it! That game sounds awesome. Another very-Japanese game comes to the US

I'm not. Capcom and Konami can do whatever the hell they want, because Sony can't afford to piss Onimusha, Devil May Cry, Metal Gear Solid, Silent Hill, etc. away.

Chulip is coming to the US!? No way! How did I miss that (and I read tokidoki yesterday...)?

That's a great Culdcept II review you did, Kabuki. Awesome layout, too.

I'm looking forward to the PS2 version, and now I'm pretty curious about Chulip..
