If there's one thing the team here at Empire Online agree about – and believe us, there's not much – it's that M Night Shyamalan is a god-like genius. So we've been bouncing around like Duracell bunnies at the news that our favourite director is in pre-production on a new film.
Today's Variety reports that Shyamalan will direct The Woods with stars Ashton Kutcher and Kirsten Dunst – with his Signs co-conspirator Joaquin Phoenix also signing up for the cast. Set in the late 19th century, the film tells the story of a rural community whose surrounding woods are home to a 'mythical race of creatures'.
Filming will begin on Shyamalan's home turf Philadelphia in October for Disney movies, whose spokesperson Nina Jacobson explained how quickly they said yes to Shyamalan's next film; 'I'd say the time lapse between us reading the script and greenlighting the movie was 45 seconds.'
As for the cast, it's clear they were all brought in at Shyamalan's direct request, having written two of the roles specifically for Phoenix ('The leader of the pack from his generation of actors') and Dunst ('such chops and energy'). Perhaps the biggest surprise though is the decision to cast Dude star Ashton Kutcher. 'I had a gut feeling about using him in a serious role, much the way I did with Donnie Wahlberg in The Sixth Sense' Shyamalan said. 'There's a period element to this one, and it's a lot more romantic than my other films.'
