Thread: Online

  1. Lucas, may I ask what you do? I am ignorant about what you do for a living. By the way, the shoot went well. Just im me next time you see me online.

  2. Nintendo hasn't begun advertsing for Mario Kart yet.

The game hits on 12/15, according to Gamestop.

Why should Nintendo tout online gaming if a) there are no online games yet and b) they don't know how it will do in the market?

Online capabilities look snazzy on paper, but they haven't really sold any racers yet. Haven't Auto Modellista's sales been kind of crappy? Yeah, that's due to the game itself not being Teh Next Big Thing, but no one can point to a textbook example of a game's online mode boosting sales.

This is why Nintendo's not pushing their online stuff with Gamespy. Well, that and the game's not due for another six months.

Are you kidding? Nintendo could start making paper bags that said "Paper Bag features on-line head to head play" and they would sell millions.

  4. Yeah, but they don't make paper bags.

They won't do it unless they will make a profit from it. If the online gameplay experience is not very good, then advertising it will hurt their reputation -- or so they may think.

  5. I think this is smart. Nintendo continues to say that online plans are not money makers and they aren't promoting one, they aren't spending a bunch of money setting up a community, they aren't advertising it. If someone asks, they say it's LAN, not online. And then what's happening. A bunch of people take the LAN support and make it online and a community crops up on its own and Nintendo doesn't really have to do any of the worrying that Sony or MS have had to do about the best way to make good of whatever situation comes up.

    Nintendo wins:Gamers win

Lots of you may want Nintendo to trumpet the hell out of these types of things, but they could just as well shoot themselves in the foot if they do. Not doing that but allowing for online play through gamespy allows them to remain cautious and most importantly to them, profitable.

In 2 years the next generation starts. Do you think Nintendo wants to spend a boat load of money on something that *might* work but would probably only be a marginal success for them if that, but would most likely cost them more money than they would make from it. They aren't Sony or MS, they can't lose tons of money to make it later.

If this works out well, *then* expect them to do more and more of it. After a while, it will become a full fledged Nintendo initiative. But not now.

Putting it at the 15th means that they have no clue, and are just guessing it'll come out in december.

Why isn't Nintendo advertising this? maybe it isn't ready and they are waiting till they actually have something to show, instead of making a big deal out of nothing(read: PSP).

Gamespy also had an article on hwo easy it would be for a 3rd party to impliment Online support in games and all these features and said with their software it would only take a company 2 - 3 days to impliment all those features for online play in a GC game
If Nintendo swearing up and down that they'll be more mature and being nicer to 3rd parties than they've ever been doesn't bring in developers, this won't either. I see Mario Kart and F-Zero using this, and then the whole service ditched when the new consoles are announced next year.

Nope, cause then people buying paper bags would still say Nintendo's paper bags are too kiddy. Image over online.
