Thread: Psx

  1. Psx

Nintendo's faliure to release their own SNES CD had led to the birth of Sony's somewhat controversial gaming system. Their primary objective back in the day was to invite as many third parties as possible, so that systems would sell because of the virtue of all of this quantity, not the quality of a smaller group of titles as others favoured to do.

In many ways it reminds me of the Genesis, and how third parties like Gamearts, Technosoft, Treasure, and Toaplan jumped on the Genesis bandwagon.

Many say that the PS1 has a glut of 3 and 4 star titles, but this is not true. If you look around you'll find some of the best games in every single genre.

The best games genre by genre

    Point Blank

Namco's best lightgun game. Better than Time Crisis.

    Elemental Gearbolt

    Another LG masterpiece.

    Ridge Racer 4.

It's kind of ugly, but it's still loads of fun fun.

    Wipeout XL

    Badass racer from Psygnosis

    Ape Escape

Very fun and innovative for a 3D plattformer.

    Jumping Flash

More 3D plattformers should play like this.

    Metal Gear Solid

    Konami's legendary stealth game

    Tenchu

    Another great stealth em up.

    Silent Hill

Konami's take on the survival horror genre.

    Castlevania: SoTN

    TNL's favorite game

    Rainbow Islands

The best port of Taito's classic

    Tony Hawks Pro Skater

Most of us would expect this to be mainstream trash, but it turned out exceptionally well.

    Alundra

The closest we'll ever get to a decent Landstalker sequel

    Valkyrie Profile

Tri Ace earned them selves a place in my heart with this game. Very innovative and forward thinking. Nick Rox had a hand in the localization.

    FFT

Yeah, we all love this game.

    Strikers 1945 II

    The best port

    DoDonPachi

Once again, the best version of this game. I play it on RAINE, but this version deserves credit for being the best.

    Vib Ribbon

    Bizzare rythm game.

    Ore No Ryouri
    [thumbnail]http://allsoft.scei.co.jp/jacket/l/scps91207b.jpg[/thumbnail]
    Sony's cooking game

    DOOM

    Excellent ID classic

    Hot Shots Golf

I love Shining Force and all, but Camelot did a really great job here.

    /me awaits the troll fanboys

  2. I love the PSone, awesome system. If it weren't for TFP I would probably have missed out on it. As a 2D machine it is on par or better than the Saturn, no question. Anyway here are some of my favourites:

Dodonpachi: Everyone loves this and the PSone version is easily the best. The sound in particular is much better than the arcade version and they removed the slowdown. Peerless along with Layer Section.

Photoboy: Seven Force and I couldn't stop laughing at this one. Quirky and fun but very memory intensive. One of those games that you get better at simply by knowing the levels inside out but I enjoy it regardless.

Ridge Racer Revolution: The best Ridge Racer on the system for me. Track design just works so well and the music is gorgeous.

Gunners Heaven: Like Gunstar Heroes except much harder.

Silent Hill: My favourite PSone game. A fantastic, unforgettable experience.

Wipeout 3 Special Edition: It only got released in Europe which is a shame as this is the best in the series. As extras it has tracks from the original Wipeout, Wipeout XL and various prototype tracks. The music selection is poor IMO (licensed music rarely works) so just image the game onto your computer and burn it with some music you like.

Final Fantasy VII: Obviously. I recently started playing it and even six years later I can't help but be enthralled by it. Great characters and plot.

Ore no Ryouri: For the reasons stated in my Sony thread.

The best PSone games stayed in Japan or were butchered on US release but then the same can be said about most systems. The clued up gamer will import.

  3. There are loads of others that I haven't mentioned above

Persona: Eternal Punishment- One of Atlus's finest RPGs. It's rumor system gives it ten times more replay than most JRPG's.

Suikoden 2: One of the best Konami games ever made. It's so easy to lose hours and hours of your life playing this game.

    Chrono Cross: Squares misunderstood masterpiece.

Toaplan Shooting Battle 1: Twin Cobra rocks

    R Type Delta: Irems finest

RC De Go: Better than Rare's RC Pro AM!

Colony Wars: Pysgnosis's excellent Wing Commanderesque game.

Vandal Hearts, Kartia, Sayuiki, Tactics Ogre: The Strategy RPGs

Panzer Bandit: IMO it's better than Guardian Heroes.

Capcom Generation Vol 2: All 3 G n G games on one disce. Better than SS version.

X Com UFO Defense: One of the best strategy games of all time.

  4. "Capcom Generation Vol 2: All 3 G n G games on one disce. Better than SS version."

How so? Personally I just use MAME but i'm interested.

  5. Have any links to screenshots to Panzer Bandit? The descriptions floating around on the Internet make it sound really derivative of Guardian Heroes.

  6. No problem with your lists (at least once you added Suikoden II), but really, talking about PS1 software and not mentioning a single Final Fantasy is a little ridiculous. In terms of audio, visuals, game scope, and impact on gaming in general they were well ahead of the pack.

Yeah, but they're popular... so that means they suck.

  8. Well I guess I have to be the troll. For the length of time it existed I'd say the Saturn was the better 2D system. You can go back and forth all day on which system was better: PSone for Time Bokan, Dodonpachi, and Strikers, Saturn for Gunbird, Souky, Thunderforce V etc.

*ahem* With that out of the way:

Skullmonkeys/Lomax in Lemmingland- Respectable platformers from the US and Europe. Both had control quirks but this was made up for in great graphics and length. Both, notably Lomax are very underrated.

Silent Bomber- One of the few pure 3D action games of the 32 bit era I enjoyed. Very fast, and loaded with great designs and mission objectives.

Silent Hill- as Sidez mentioned one of the 32 bit era's best.

Zanac X Zanac- Compile finally graces us with a new shooter and it doesn't dissapoint.

Sidez, you should emulate the PCE Photoboy if you get the chance, the music is better and there's a few graphic changes. *-neo

The PS1 has more variety than any console ever made. Anyone who doesn't like it has some serious biases against it since it has something for everyone and then some.

The only weakness this machine had was not having Nintendo and Sega as developers. There aren't any mascot platformers than compare to the best Mario and Sonic games on it.

  10. "Sidez, you emulate the PCE Photoboy if you get the chance, the music is better and there's a few graphic changes"

The PSone rerelease features both the PCE original music as well as the slightly shabbier PSone Remix which is the default setting.

Graphically the PSone game removes the ocassional flicker when you snap a photo and it has a marginally different screen layout during the intro but that's all.

Long story short = PSone, best allround gaming system (2D and 3D) ever. Any trolling and I'll back that statement up 100 times overhttp://www.the-nextlevel.com/board/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
