Thread: Sega appreciation thread?

  1. Sega appreciation thread?

Heheh, we all know that TNL <8 Sega but there hardly are any topics dedicated to this.
Sega's key strength is its diversity of output that has given it some of the best games in every single genre. Their ability to innovate is second to none, and they still support the coin ops, despite the fact it isn't as financially lucrative a market as it used to be.

Anyhow, these are what I think are the highlights of their career.

Space Harrier. The 1985-1990 period for the most the part was a period of recession for the arcades(quality wise) in my eyes. Hundreds of me too beat em ups and slugish shooters flooded the arcades. There is no way in hell that games like Ninja Gaiden, Gradius, and Renegade can compare to masterpieces like Robtron, Tron, and Gyruss.
Yu Suzukis Space Harrier was a different story though. This game along with others like Galaxy Force were some of the most forward thinking coin ops of their time. Space Harrier was released in the same year as Gradius... and there's such a big difference between the two that it's not even funny.=\

Outrun: Light years ahead of its acid washed time. It's still one of the greats of the racing genre.

Fantasy Zone: One of the finest shooters of all time. The bullet patterns that this game dishes out are similar to those in Caves shooters. Does anyone know which team worked on this one?

Monster World: Segas take on Zelda. Better than the former in all most every way.

Sonic: We all love these games.

[b]Puyo Puyo 2: The deepest puzzle game ever? One of Compiles finest.

Shining Force: This series will always be great whether it's an action RPG, dungeon romp, or strategy game. Now if only we could get Camelot to stop making those Golden Sun games.

Shinobi: Real ultimate power! The best Ninja series ever. And there ain't anything wrong with the latest game you rat bastards

Daytona USA: Try to go easy on the car!

Virtua Fighter: Im on indefinite hiatus from fighting games, but this series really is one of the pinnacles of game design. At the hight of its popularity kids in Japan were signing up for professional classes.

    NIGHTS:It never gets old.

Panzer Dragoon: The first two were Space Harriers, but Saga is a really incredible game. The sad thing is that I played about 5 hours into the game back in the day, thinking that I'd be able to acquire at a cheaper price sometime later.... and now the price is insanely high on Ebay.

Virtual On: These games own your soul. Assault Suit Leynos is the only mech game that plays better.

Crazy Taxi: The first game is one of the raddest games ever made.

Shenmue 2: The first one was pretty dreary, but this game can easily rank with the best of Sierra's and Lucasarts adventure titles. And it contains Space Harriers.

    Rez: Level 5.

And I could go on for ages.

  5. Half of the posts on this board are Sega Appreciation. This thread is not necessary.

    PS: Crazy Taxi blows.

    PPS: So does Panzer Dragoon.

  6. =\

  7. People don't see it that way though. The only thing they can see is that Sega takes to long to make games in genres that they like so Sega Sucks. Way too many times have they gotten criticized for no reason.

    1. They're not as consistant as square etc.
answer - who freaking cares if they make a bad game once in awhile. Bottomline, as long as they have more quality games than another developer during the year, who cares about their average/bad games? Just don't play them and you still end up with more quality games than pretty much every other company.

    2. Screw PSO, VC sports. Sega sucks!Where's my PSV, Shining Force etc.
answer - Since Sega is the most flexible company ever, just wait until they finish their current stuff. The genres you want them to develop in will eventually come. Shining Force is in development and PSV will eventually come. Sega does not suck just because you don't like games like PSO and VC sports. If you can wait 1-2 or more years for stuff like RE4, half life 2, and MGS3, waiting for PSV isn't exactly a problem.

It's almost like Sega is graded in it's own league or something. Somehow the less great games you have, the more consistant and the better developer you're as long as you don't try some whacked out games or make an average one. Maybe sega should just make a couple of big budget games and screw the rest just to save their rep.

  8. Sega = (^_^)

Sega is my favourite videogame developer, by far... I don't like all of Sega's games. Some of the most popular ones are not my bag. I am not that much of a fan of AM2, for example... but my list of top 20 videogames would probably be more than 50% Sega games.

» On Master System my favourite games are: Alex Kidd in Miracle World, Wonder Boy Series, Penguin Land, Zillion, Phantasy Star, and Fantasy Zone.

» On Genesis my fave Sega made games are: Sonic Series, Pulseman, Shining Series, Phantasy Star Series, Landstalker, Ristar, Wonder Boy Series, Ecco, Puyo Puyo 2, Shinobi Series..

» On Saturn my fave Sega made games are: NiGHTS, Shining Series, Sonic R, Sega Rally, Daytona, Burning Rangers, Panzer Dragoon Series

» On Dreamcast my fave Sega made games are: Skies of Arcadia, Jet Set Radio, Rez, MSR (does this count?), Sonic Series, SC5, VOOT, NHL2K, Virtua Tennis.

» Arcade games: Zaxxon, Flicky, Pengo, Congo Bongo, Aurail, Out Run, Quartet...

» Handheld: Sonic Advance Series, Sonic Pocket, Sonic GG Series, ChuChu Rocket, PUYO POP(!), Super Monkey Ball, Castle of Illusion, Lucky Dime Caper, Shining Series...

» Third Party: Shinobi, JSRF, PDO, Super Monkey Ball..

I am probably forgetting some favourites. There is just so much to list.

    ps. I love the kitty.

Can Sega make a new Monster World? Without Compile? I suppose they could always contract the company that Compile became (drawing a blank on the name) to make it, if they were interested.... If not, then I wonder who they'd tap..

Would you rather see a 2D GBA game along the lines of the rest of the series? 2.5D on a console? 3D?

I'd be happy with a GBA game, to be honest.. and I'd like to see Sega port MWIV to GBA as well and finally release that lesser known gem in all regions.
