Thread: Your favorite non-Capcom/SNK 2D fighters?

  1. Weaponlord and MK 2 rank as my top two non-Capcom/SNK fighters.

I think the high resolution of GGX and 2 make the animation look worse then it really is somehow. I can't quite explain it, but when I was playing on a smaller TV, the animation suddenly seemed better to me.

I like GGX2 better than SF3 myself, mainly because I like the characters better and the extra modes keep the game fun when I don't have anyone to play against. It also can be played at a low level and a high level and still be enjoyable in either case. I play at.. an admittedly very low level.

  3. I'm surprised no one has yet mentioned Primal Rage. That was one of my favorite fighting games of the mid 1990's. The arcade version was a real treat, with slick stop-motion animated graphics, heart-pounding sound, and one of the best fighting engines of the time.

Most of the home versions were pretty good, although all of the ports suffered in one way or another. While the home versions are fun in their own right, the arcade game is still the definitive version of the game.

  4. Guilty Gear XX..best cast of characters in any fighting game. I can actually pick Random, and not be dissapointed with whoever I get..(okay I hate Anji, but thats it!)

The Burst is such a brilliant idea too..I find myself trying to use it in other fighters when I then release I can't.

The Sega CD version is the game that came to my mind too. It was a lot of fun, and there were cool characters, moves, and combos. For example, Trident was my guy -- a green fish guy from Atlantis. Press A+B+C (IIRC!) would turn him into water form and he could pass thru the opponent and land on the other side -- then a close Attack to grab and then a 1-2 hit would knock the opponent over. He could fire a beam that would stun -- and HOW GRATIFYING it was to stun your friend then walk up to him (as he's helpless) then pull off an easy 1-2-3 combo. Each character had fairly unique and fast moves. Plus there were four finishing moves that somehow were inspired-by but not totally ripping-off MK.

Totally unlike the Genesis version, of which its flaw was that most moves were charge moves and you never seemed to have enough yinyang to pull off the better moves. I wish you hadn't mentioned the aborted Saturn version because this was one of my most-desired games -- my Saturn box even had a picture of it.

  6. Guilty Gear X/X2, KI, MK, MK2, Bloodstorm (it was cool for its time, shut up), Eternal Champion CD, and I've heard good things about Martial Masters, even though it's rare as hell outside of Asia.

  7. *waiting to see who lists Cosmic Carnage 32X

  8. Geez, upon reading the topic I immediately knew Guilty Gear would be the instant favorite.

Personally, I didn't like GG1 or GGX, but I never played GGXX, so maybe it's as good as people say. But then "they" said the other two were good, and I was sorely disappointed..

    Anyway, my favorite non-SNK/Capcom 2-D fighters would be, in order;

    Waku Waku 7
    World Heroes Perfect
    Yu Yu Hakusho (MD)
Ninja Masters (wait, was that developed by SNK?)
    Power Instinct/Groove On Fight

and.. Golden Axe The Duel! j/k

  9. Before GGXX, the last non-Capcom/SNK 2D fighter to get my money was MK2. I think I played MK3 for about 5 minutes before deciding it was junk. Although, after watching this guy Lex play UMK3 at ECC, I've gained new appreciation for it. The stuff he was doing was out of control!

GGXX is a fantastic game though, I just wish it actually had a US arcade release.

Wasn't there a Double Dragon fighting game? Or am I just mis-remembering something? It might have just been erased from my memory

  10. No one says Time Killers...

    Well, maybe cause it sucked.
