I'm glad they improved Odin. All of these remakes are looking good. I emailed Sega asking if these games will come out in North America so I hope they give me an answer soon.

I'm interested, but Sony could pull the same thing it did with Ys (not good looking enough). Another thing, we get a 3D Altered Beast, but no SoR or Golden Axe update. Strange world.

This update looks nice... totally SNES-ey, but nice. But I have one big question: are random battles still in the game? If they are, no thanks. Seriously. Random battles serve no purpose in gaming, especially not now in 2003.

Just saw a shot of Golden Axe. High quality 2D art on polygona backgrounds. Looks good.
I recall them saying it was going to be in full 3D. Judging by that screenshot, it could possibly be.
Ugh, fuck. If these remakes come stateside I may have to buy a PS2 earlier than anticipated.

I'm sure they will be, but the difficulty and encounter rate will probably be lower. I dunno what the beef with Random battles is, though. They make perfect sense to me, as long as they aren't too frequent, and the battle system is solid. Really, you have to do some fighting in an RPG. whether the fight is triggere by bumping into a monster or by a throw of the dice, it's going to be just as annoying if the system sucks and just as fun if it doesn't. It's not like you really battle less in Grandia than in Skies. It's just that Grandia's battles are fun and Skies aren't.Originally posted by diffusionx

Frogacuda... random battles blow. If you see the enemy, you can avoid them. Even if you can't (I know there were plenty of parts of Chrono Trigger or Cross where the enemy ran to you), there is something that is more appeasing to our psyche when we can at least see the enemy. If the battle is random, and they just show up out of nowhere, with a big WHOOSH and some swirlies then you have to fight the battle... it sucks ass. Instead of being something that we can see and prepare ourselves for, if only for a second, it becomes an arbitrary piece of shit battle system that seems like it was designed to slow you down more than anything else.
Plus, it feels so mechanic and artificial - there's an enemy like, miniscule in size that you can't see on the screen! Great! Wow! It's just stupid, there's no reason for it.
Chrono Trigger had the best battle set up because you could see the enemies and often avoid them, which makes total sense since they're mostly monsters, not super ninja monsters that can appear out of nowhere and take you by surprise. They're probably just hungy and looking for their next meal.
Considering how primitive the first PS had to be due to hardware its acceptable that the enemies couldn't be seen, but now there's no excuse for it.
I'm taking a wait and see attitude to all of these games, though if the action based ones turn out good I'll probable import them.
