There is a somewhat intense debate going on on gamefaqs over Viewtiful Joe being a 2D or 3D game. Opinions seem to be evenly split.
The game definitely plays as 2D, as you can only move up/down, left/right and not in a 3rd dimension. The background however appears 3D, shit I only played it for like 15 minutes at Fry's, I am now forgetting exactly what the background looks like.
What are your thoughts...? 2D, 3D, or 2.5 D....?

"Why does everyone think this game is 3-D? YOU PLAY IT ON A FLAT PLANE! Have you even played the demo?!? You can move left, right, and jump. Can you move in and out? NO! Now, I'm sure some of you will say "But you turn corners and go down curved staircases!" So what? It's Non-Euclidean Geometry, big deal. You're still "trapped" in a certian plane of movement whether it bends or not!
Sure, it has 3-D graphics. SSB:M did too, but does that make it a 3-D fighter like Soul Caliber or Power Stone? No...
And people don't realize: The PSP will eliminate 2-D on handhelds in the same way the PSX did on consoles! I'm not saying Sony's an evil, 2-D hating corporation or anything, but moron casual gamers will always buy 3-D. Both Sony and Nintendo will have to push 3-D handheld games if they want to compete. So guess what Sony, Nintendo, and all companies publishing handheld software will make? 3-D! We need to show them that there is still a strong market for 2-D games. I'm 99% sure that most games on GBA would be 3-D if the hardware easily allowed it."

This post preety must sums up my thoughts on the debate on Veitiful Joe, and the PSP.
But then again anyone who thinks 3-D graphics are going to be easy on the eyes on a 3 inch screen is retarted.
"If you aren't a bit depressed, then you aren't paying attention to what's going on in the world - Get busy living or get busy dieing."
Going with what supermario was talking about in regard to 3D gaming on portables, I read somewhere that Nintendo said it was working on an advanced version of the SuperFX chip to compete with the PSP (or something like that). I can't wait to play Mario and Metroid with Snes Star Fox graphics!

Yep. End of discussion.Originally posted by Hero
bleh. 2.5D has been a term around for a while now. If you have 3D graphics, and 2D gameplay, it's usually called 2.5D. I don't see how anyone would get confused. Maybe the celshaded graphics along with the 2D gameplay has people perplexed?
If so, that's hillarious.
Well that's like, your opinion, man.

...why do these debates even exist? does it make the game any better if it's one or the other? f'in lame CG's, ruining the industry for the rest of us...

You underestimate people's stupidity. I once saw a kid playing Jet Grind Radio at an EB. After a few minutes he put down the controller and said to his freind "Man, that would have been a great game if they made it 3D".Originally posted by Hero
