Oh man, this is gonna turn into another religion debate, I just know it.

You know, I was thinking the other night about the universe...and how little we really know about the nature of things. I mean, we all assume that the universe is infinite, but can a human being truly grasp the concept of something that never ends? It's easy to say, "woah, dude, that goes on forever" but it's another thing altogether to actually comprehend that. I mean, everything we know has an end: your life, your relationships, the block you live on, your paycheck, your closet, that dark chocolate Mikly Way bar you're eating, everything. But the universe...does it truly go on and on forever? Forever? Try to grasp it. You can't. Somewhere, you'll think, there has to be an end to it. But if there is, if nothing, nothing is truly infinite, what lies beyond? And beyond that?
What's most maddening about this is that we'll never know. Not in a million years. We can turn to science, philosophy, etc. for answers, but we'll never truly know.
Any opinions?

ANNOUCEMENT:
THIS IS NOT A RELIGION DEBATE, THERE ARE ENOUGH THREADS FOR THAT. THIS IS PURELY SCIENTIFIC/PHILOSOPHICAL. IF YOU BRING UP GOD/JESUS/BUDDHA/ETC. I WILL POOP ON YOUR HEAD. THANK YOU.

It just keeps going and going and going. Eh, I don't care enough for it to rattle my brain.
The other day my friend looked up and said "The universe is so fucking big! HOLY SHIT IT'S HUGE!" Then he ran inside.
There must be an end somewhere, or it just circles around itself.
To understand man, walk it shoe on other foots.
pimp? can you just poop on my head...forever?![]()
i dont believe in the concept of infinity. it just doesnt seem logical to me. everything has to stop sometime. sure, there are alot of stars in the galaxy, but at any one point in time there must be a set number of them.
I think the universe ends. Evidence of this: scientists say the universe is expanding, and in order to expand, you need the capability to get bigger.

That's cool. But if that's the case, then what is the universe expanding into? I mean, if it's expanding it's gotta be displacing space somewhere else, right?Originally posted by arjue

But like Dolemite said: If it ends, what comes after that?
The size of the universe doesn't bug me out nearly as much as the infinity of time. Specifically, the infinity of time in the reverse direction. Go back as far as you care to go, and there is still a day before that. It doesn't seem possible that there wasn't a "first second/minute/hour", and yet it doesn't seem possible that there was because of the "well, what about the second before that" question.
