Thread: Death of 2D gaming inevitable?

  1. Death of 2D gaming inevitable?

I made a topic about this once long ago, but I can't seem to find it on the boards, which led me to believe that it was all in my head.

Anyways, do you think 2D gaming will last forever, or will it slowly fade into obscurity?

I have no problem with 3D gaming once so ever, but to see such a viable format like 2D gaming die for really no good reason would be a pain to see. But sadly, I think it just may be inevitable.

As hardware gets more and more powerful I think developers will consider it a waste of transistors to make them power these more "simplistic" games.

    But, of course, hopefully not...
Well that's like, your opinion, man.

    Why aren't you sleeping?

I don't mind killing of the 2D genre; we'll always have the greats that remain. Time to add to the 3D realm.

Now that just doesn't make any sense at all. What, if we keep 2D barely alive (like it is now), we can't add to the "3D realm" or something?

  4. 2D gaming needs to stay alive in some form so developers can figure out how to properly implement aspects of those games in 3D, and improve upon gaming as a whole. I seriously doubt this will happen though, but a man can dream. I don't think 2D gaming will fully die. There will always be fan-made games for the genre, if nothing else.

Well, we can, but more focus on 3D! I love my 2Ds, but we sure do have enough, and it's time to put all our focus onto 3D and improve it, since it's not all that great as 2D right now.

  6. I think it will remain, people from teams that where forced to shut down will hopefully start something new if it comes to that, there's a lot of dedicated people out there and I have trust in them.
When you see Ikaruga breaking 50k (not including europe) you know there is still hope, but I hope that not every single game will have to rely on poly to get the attention.

  7. Rich, I see what you're saying. Right now, I'd love to see 3D gaming improve to the point where the gameplay mechanics in the best 3D games were as well-executed as those in the best 2D games.

  8. What madness has taken root here?!

You're seriously looking forward to the death of 2D gaming?? I suppose you'll get your wish someday, but hopefully you won't live to see it.

2D gaming must thrive! Even during gaming's twilight, there will always be.. PONG.

We've got 15+ years of 2D gaming! It's going to take a damn long time for 3D to bring itself up to a standard where it can even be considered to be as good as 2D.

  10. After the GBA era, and everything out there is 3D, I wouldn't be surprised at all if 2D became something there was demand for again, because it would seem more like something new to a large portion of gamers, and instead of the 'old and played out' image it exudes to most now, it would turn into just another style of games, almost like a seperate genre.
Buy Yakuza and Oblivion. Help yourself, help TNL.
