Thread: Hooking a PC to a 15 hz RGB monitor

  1. Hooking a PC to a 15 hz RGB monitor

Anybody got any ideas? I really want to run my PC off of the 15 hz RGB monitor in my DDR cabinet for Stepmania. I just can't think of how to do it...

  2. Many older PC cards with TV out would leave the VGA port active when in "TV mode". With my Riva128 card I would boot into TV mode, and then plug the VGA port into my arcade monitor.

Modern cards do dual output, so enabling TV output won't change the VGA port output, so that's out. The next option might be a video decoder, there are several cheap ($40-60) VGA->TV adaptors available. Alternatively, you can use the S-video output from your PC and pipe it through an XRGB-2, which outputs either 31kHz VGA or 15kHz RGB.

    Lawrence.
Please stop confusing your opinion with fact.

Yeah, 'tis a helpful place. I think I'll first try some software solutions to tricking cards into outputing 15 hz, and if that doesn't work I'll buy that spiffy (and cheap) card they pointed me to over at Atarilabs. My PC isn't even getting to my house until Wednesday at the earliest, so I'm in no hurry.

  5. Anyone else find it funny that people are mentioning atarilabs.com as an excellent source of info after the question was more or less answered...from the guy who runs atarilabs.com?

It's sorta like when John Fogerty was sued for sounding too much like John Fogerty. Or when Bob Dylan was sued for not sounding enough like Bob Dylan. Only to a lesser degree. Still a little wierd.

    I just noticed that.

  7. Well, I got my PC hooked up to the DDR cabinet today, and DWI is perfect. It turns out there was a free software solution to the problem. A program called Powerstrip did the trick. It apparently works on most video cards and lets you select exactly the resolution and frequency you need. All I had to do was make a video adapter to plug the DDR monitor into a VGA port. Here's the link. Great program.
