Are you still having trouble getting the extra player code to work? If so, it's probably because it ends in "A B A B A start". Enter it at the title screen, and the extra four characters will be selectable.
It's best to focus on item collecting really early in the game, since it's near impossible to keep track of everything once it gets more hectic. Really, though, it's a good idea to just play around and get good at surviving before going nuts with items.
I've survived deep into level 5 a few times, but I tend to score the most during games where I lose my last life against the level 4 boss. Strange.
I'm having a hard time completing sets during level 1 - if I'm lucky, I can complete food at the start of level 2. What combination of charge shots do you use to complete two sets on level 1, Matt?
It'll be different if you're using Solo, since his charge shot range and duration is totally different from Karte's. But this is the pattern I use and a variation of it will probably work:
- Use a level 2 shot as soon as you possibly can on the first 3 tanks (for level 2 & 1 shoes+food).
- Charge up to level 8, grab the secret pinwheel, and nail the tanks for level 8 food&shoes. You may be able to grab some level 3&4 items also, if you time it right.
- Now, use a level 7 shot on the next set of tanks, and keep counting down with levels 6, 5, 4, etc. until you complete the rest.
Once you get better at it, you can start focussing less on food/shoes and more on axes, staffs, and necklaces which you can then complete in level 2.
This is a little easier if you use the inventory display "feature" - hold down start for about a second and press A. Be aware that this will distract you and you'll suffer many stupid deaths because of it!
