Thread: Backlight / Frontlight (handheld lighting preference)

  1. Backlight / Frontlight (handheld lighting preference)

After spending all this time with the GBA SP, it got me thinking back to the other handheld designs which featured a backlight. The GBA SP of course uses a frontlit design.

In your recent or past experience - which do you ideally prefer, and why?

  2. Give me a Maglite miners cap over a SP any day of the week.

  3. I prefer backlit, it just looks more natural if the light is coming from behind the screen. It's also often more evenly lighted across the screen.

Unfortunately there has yet to be a backlit portable which doesn't drain batteries like a MFer, so I'll gladly take the tradeoff of significantly longer battery life and less-even lighting frontlights provide. But in a PERFECT world...backlight all the way
    omg TNL epics!

  4. Backlighting seems to reduce glare, too. But I guess since I haven't played a handheld console in like 9 years, it doesn't matter much.

  5. The only backlit I've played was the Game Gear, and it always seemed pretty washed out. I don't need a console to provide light in a dark cave. I just need to see the screen.

Good, so I wasn't the only one. Like I said, though you may have a little glare, Maglite's taped to a helmet are the way to go.

  7. Backlight for better color reproduction, frontlight for better battery life. I choose the frontlight.
To understand man, walk it shoe on other foots.

  8. Backlight definitely looks better... but the battery issue is a legit drawback.

However, it's been a while since a new backlit unit came out. You cannot compare SP to GameGear. With more modern screen/battery technology the battery issue might not be so bad.... so I'll vote "backlight".

ps. Is it known if PSP will have a backlight or frontlight yet?

Yeah, the problem with the old backlit portables(Game Gear, Lynx) isn't that they're backlit, it's that the screens themselves are blurry bitches.
