Thread: Turn-based War Strategy Games

  1. Wow I had no idea about the psone version of X-com. I just recently took the big "fattie game case" from one of my copies and used it for my Saturn copy of SF collection.

Maybe I'll put that back on X-com and use the case from Warhawk instead...

  2. Dynasty Tactics, you fool. You can't be Mr. Gaming Savant until you've given it a shot.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms may or may not appeal - it is at once complex and yet annoyingly simple. Lots of things to do and learn, but the tasks themselves aren't generally that complex. But its battle system basically drop kicks all these other "strategy" games in the head - most console strats tend to be rather insulting to the intelligence after a while.

Of course, if you're truly adventurous, you could import one of the recent Nobunaga's games, and immerse yourself in medieval kanji hell. I prefer it to Koei's other turn-based efforts, even if it does turn into a rifle-manufacturing fest after a certain point.

One of my all time faves in the genre is Vic Tokai's Conflict on NES. Turn based rpg-style battles between modern day military units with a rock/paper scissors kind of set up. It's incredibly addictive, especially if you can get someone to play you at it.

Heh, I haven't forgotten about Dynasty Tactics. It's just always rented out when I go to rent it.

    AW2
    Final Fantasy Tactics
    Tactics Ogre
    Heroes of Might and Magic

Don't know too much about real-life military games though...
