Personally, I fine R-Type and its kin easier than most shooters in some ways. It's harder at first, but it involves decidedly less twitch, so I don't plateau as quickly. Indeed. The Morning Star kinda resembles it also.
Fun Fact - The 2nd Level Boss in Radiant SilverGun is an homage to the R-9. Just take a look at it, and the weapons that it uses.
Anyone gotten to the level 2 that has no water? Its the hardest level I have come across so far.

Yeah, I did. It kicked my butt for a while. I couldn't even get past the 2nd part of the level (where the waterfall is usually pushing down on your ship). I'll try again in a little bit.
Homage Alert - The Andromedeus STRONGLY resembles the ship from Sol-Deace.
