Thread: R-Type Final

  1. Use your force and bits aggressively. It's important that you do so to get comfortable with exactly what can and cannot be blocked (or blocked safely for that matter).

Practice swapping your force between front and rear, and learn where you'll need to do it on each level.

Figure out when to detach your force and leave it detached. This makes some bosses much easier, and some parts of certain levels much easier.

Use your speed settings. Three is my normal speed, four for serious dodging. Two is for precision movement, one is for EXTREMELY tight movement (only a few places in the game that I can think of).

Play a bunch! You'll unlock lots of new ships, and there are many, many different types. You'll find several you're comfortable with sooner or later.

    Enjoy the game, it's great

  2. Thanks a lot, when you refer to speeds is it like a manual in a racing game where you can shift up or down to go faster/slower? I didn't know that was in this game, nice touch. Probably adds lots of strategy.

If there are no enemies on the screen, always be charging a wave cannon shot. even a single meter shot will take out almost any medium sized baddie. This will leave you with much more breathing room because such medium sized ships are usually accompanied by waves of smaller ships or turrents elsewhere. Just make sure you have the meter charged ALL the way (for at least one charge) before discharging, because if even a fraction of the meter isn't all the way charged when you fire, there is a HUGE difference in the power of the shot. It can take 3 or 4 almost charged shots to do the damage of one fully charged single meter shot.

I will second the "use your force aggressively" advice, in fact I rarely fire shots at small waves of little ships. Absorbing shots, ramming small ships & dealing damage to larger enemies boosts your Dose level. Learn every place that you can safely stick your force to grind on something & earn you dose. Level 3 is a great place for this, on the last little section before the boss you can get around 50% dose from destroying battleship sections with the Force pod.

If you are having trouble clearing a section or boss, change your ship & tactics. The tentacle force ships have an auto tracking detached force pod that can be VERY helpful in some tight places, where it can be off ramming & shooting things on one side of the screen while you work on something else. The R 13 ships have the anchor force with a damaging tether that is really cool and opens up all kinds of new ways to take levels on.

Maybe I can think of more later.

  4. Wow, theres really a lot of strategy involve, now I'm itching to play. Okay now about the force to take out the smaller enemies do you recommend having it attached or detached to do so? Or does it all depend on the situation?

What does the anchor force do exactly? And a damaging tether? lost me there

  5. For ramming small waves of ships, just have it attached, front or back whichever is better for the situation. Just use it on any one hit enemy, also use it on POW armors, that way you just ram through & pick up the power up at the same time. You will have your force attached most of the time because it will save your life quite a bit by blocking smaller shots. Just remember that sometimes it is better to send it out to do some dirty work for you. You will have to dodge quite a bit more, but dodging bullets in this game is a much easier task than in a manic shmup because there are almost no spam patterns, almost every shot in the game is aimed directly at you, so it requires only a small movement to get out of the way.

The anchor force is on the R-13 series (that you will get way later, check that link I provided on the previous page for details on how to get it). It is shaped like a claw & when you fire it off & it hits any larger enemy that requires multiple hits to kill, it will attach to the enemy, doing massive damage. While it is depoyed, there is an energy tether connecting you to the force pod, this tether does damage, & when the Anchor is attached to an enemy, moving the D-pad will whip the tether around. It is really nice for taking out smaller things while doing damage to a larger foe. You can get really tricky like putting the force on the rear of your ship & firing it past the falling head of the 4th boss, as the head falls past you the force pod will be trapped back there but the tether will take out most of the sperm things that would normally be coming out of the head.

  6. Man you could write a book about this game, thanks for taking the time to explain. If I have any more questions I'll know where to come.

    Thanks again JM,

  7. And when you've played it a bit, the invincible cheat is a must to get all the extra ships, I have my ps2 running in the back right now as a matter of fact

I got to stage 7 today on one credit, I've never been a big fan of R-type or the likes and it didn't change with this game. I second probably every complaint voiced in this thread and through out the internet.
I mean the stage 6 boss for instance, I would love to see someone dodge that second attack with all the rocks, is it even designed to be beaten that way? I find myself looking for safe spots everywhere.

Well, R•Type is has never been about dodging, more about memorization than reflexes.

On the level 6 boss you can get into the little space between the two snake chutes on the left & just sit there & fire your gun. Do wave cannons on the sack & rapid fire on all the crap that flies at you & the boss will go down VERY quickly. You don't even have to move your ship once you get into position. Maybe this doesn't work on higher difficulties, but I just play on Human & this works every single time.

I feel like a good shooter should have both but to each his own

Yea I do it all the time, and that's my problem with the game.
