Thread: R-Type Final

  1. Well I gave it a go on the weekend and had a blast. I really enjoyed the old R-Types when I was young and this game brought back a great feeling. I only got to the third stage but I could see myself getting used to each stage bit by bit till eventually I get to the end.

I read in the instruction manual that some ships will allow you to control the force with the right analog stick. Can't wait to get one of those ships.

Honestly, if you get into the spot I've been talking about, you don't even need the dose bomb, you can just hold rapid fire & never move & it will die like a little bitch. That way you can save the bomb for some of the nastier spots in F.

Sort of. Pay attention to the fifth stage boss next time you get to him.

It's something you'll get more comfortable with as time passes. When you call the Force back to your ship, make sure you've got a bit of room to maneuver. As it gets closer, do a loop around it, and you can switch places with it. If you want to practice this, send it out, call it back, then spend a bit of time 'dancing' around it while it tries to dock with you. Any level that requires you to have it on the front or back will always give you a slight breather to reposition it, you just need to learn where these breaks are. Even if you miss them, you can still dodge shots while you reposition it.

And of course, you can simply have it in the right spot in the first place. If in doubt, stick it on your rear end - you'll always have forward firepower, and you can dodge from the front, but without the Force on your rear, you're unprotected from back assaults.

  4. I have 2 files going on this game, one at work (which is where I finally cleared Kids mode) and one at home.

Sometimes I get confused about which file I did what stuff on.

  5. 50 ships unlocked... There's some really nifty ships open later

Damn I spent all this time unlocking ships and now I'm too bored with the game to play it anymore LOL. What I would have liked is more stages to unlock (besides the variants) to increase play time...oh well...
"50,000! You scored 50,000 points on Double Dragon?"

  7. I was a little worried about that same thing. The main game itself can get tedious, especially if you play through it in succession, as it can be beaten in under an hour and is so rigidly pattern-based.

I've got 21 ships unlocked. I spend way more time fooling around with Score Attack and AI vs. than I do playing the main mode. I figure I'll unlock em all eventually....

Not if you just hope that time will unlock them all. Here is an excellent site for unlocking the ships and what you need to do. I printed it out and have a highlighter.

Anyways, I am going with just one credit at a time. Aside from practicing a level I do not continue. I have not seen past level 4 yet: have over 8 hours in, and still have over half the game left to see. I hope to get to the level 5 boss this weekend and open some more ships.

Some times it is perspective. If I just continued every time and went though it I would be bored out of my mind by the game now probably.

  9. Thanks shaper - I've seen a guide very similar to that, and printed out a checklist too. Very helpful. Many of the later ships either seem grossly overpowered or bizarre to the point of unplayable (in the main mode, that is).

The last ship I unlocked was Cross the Rubicon, so I can reach stage 3.5. Favorite so far is the R-11B "Peace Maker", and I have a soft spot for the radar pattern ships (something about recon units really appeals to me) and the Kiwi Berry (cute!).

  10. The only level that really has "Variants" is 2. But, 2.4 is different enough from 2.0 that it doesn't really matter to me. 3.5 is a whole new level (with a really cool boss) that fits in between 3.0 and 4.0 The 3 different versions of the last 3 stages (6.0, 6.1, 6.2, and F-A, F-B, F-C) are all really different also. 6.2 in particular.

I finally made it to F-C today (on Kids mode) and I couldn't make it through it. I'm also only missing ONE enemy in my Bydo Lab (which I'm assuming is somewhere in F-C). What happens when you get 100% in the lab? Also, what's the difference between killing a ship normally to get it into your lab, and using one of the camera ships to do it?
